1950 Chevy 3100 Title Question

I am thinking about purchasing a 1950 Chevy 3100. It does not have a title. It will have a bill of sale. I'm not sure whether it has a VIN. Have any of you had any experience with obtaining a title under these circumstances?

Thanks

Re: 1950 Chevy 3100 Title Question

I just picked up a 49 chevy, I love these old trucks. Good pick in year, I would get it. I'm calling the revenue office today and filing for lost title. They will do a search and if it comes up ok and can't find a previous owner then you can get it in your name. I heard that it can be $200 or a little more to do this. I have a tread on this page where a guy old me about him doing this. Post pics of this truck and good luck, let us know how it goes.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3100 Title Question

The VIN # on these trucks is usually the casting # on the engine block. I found this out the hard way when I went to pick up my new plates and the serial #(found on the driver's side door jam)didn't match my title. If there's no block or title, not sure where else to look. I plan on stamping the chassis and cab with both VIN and serial #'s when I finish(for theft purposes). BTW, You should be able to run the #'s and make sure it's not stolen property before you purchase it.

Short and simple Daniel is probably very correct and I would do that before I bought, its probably clean, or I hope because these oldschool trucks need a home again, another chance at life. By the way, its a project before its a project...lol...1 being finding a way to title it. Hope it goes well, that thing needs a good home.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3100 Title Question

I called about a lost title and they said if I don't know the name of the last titled owner then you can file for a bonded title. A guy just said on my tread that the waiting list in Washington is 3 years but they give you something so you can tag and drive it until then. He said just keep up with all the labor put in and the money spent on it, and keep track of how long you have it and money per day or whatever for storing it, so if the last title owner comes for the truck he has to reinburse you...lol. I would do that if you get a bonded title so there are no problems, mine has been in the family for 30 years of so, so if the last titled owner wanted it he would have came for it by now. Hope that helps.

In VA you need to do a information request Form (CRD-93). It costs like $8.00. If a owner shows up on the search, you need to send a certified letter saying your going to file for title, and wait 30 days to see if they try and claim it. If they dont, or if the letter comes back undeliverable , go get your title. VA DMV can be a pain to deal with sometimes, so make sure you have all the documentation they want. You can find it under abandoned vehicles on the DMV website. The problem Ive run into with one of my pieces of junk, is no owner shows up on the search. Everyone I talk to at DMV tells me something different , on what to do next. Last was I need to do a search in all the surrounding states. Easier said than done because their DMV's are a lot more screwed up than VA's. If you run into that problem it would probably be best to spend the money for one of those title services.

One more thing. If you dont have the vin plate on the truck. You can have a state trooper come look at it and they will issue a Rebuilt or kitcar it's something like that vin number for it. I'm not sure the details ,but you can find them on the DMV website

Re: 1950 Chevy 3100 Title Question

I've dealt with this guy before http://www.classicartitle.com/ and it worked fine. I'm in Virginia also. $150 and you send him your vin number, he gets a Alabama (Alabama is a registration only state for older vehicles) registration, a notorized bill-of-sale and a letter from the AL DMV stating that AL is a non-title state. On his paperwork it looks like he bought the car from you, then registered it in AL, then resold it back to you. I'm not sure what the loopole is or how it works, I just know it works in VA, I've done it with a 70 Camaro I bought from CA with a salvage title that VA wouldn't register for me. And the beauty of it all, now I have a car that has a good non-salvage title. good luck.

I picked up the truck in Martinsville, VA on Sunday. After I looked up the VIN. It turned out to be a 1950 GMC 3/4 ton pickup. It was an Old Navy Store display.

Nice score. And, right down the road from me. Was it ebay? Does he have any more? There's sure a bunch of those old navy trucks on ebay now.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3100 Title Question

I did find it on e-bay. The individual I bought the truck from only had one. I haven't looked on e-bay for a week or so. Since Old Navy got rid of about 1500 trucks, I'm sure e-bay will have more listings for awhile.
