Fuel pump question
 

I got a 83 Silerado with a 454 in it and the fuel pump went out. I already got another and need to know how hard it is to change. I read somewhere that it can be tricky getting it back on casue of getting the fuel pump rod in the right spot. Any info will be much appreciated.

It is pretty easy. Only "tip" you really need is to put a little grease on the pushrod to hold it up and out of the way when you put the new pump in. Other than that, it is a real easy and straightforward job.

Cokeman: Whenyou pull the old pump the rod will slide down. Coat it with chassis grease and push it back up then install pump. Run pump bolts in about 1/2 way. Grasp pump and try to tilt it so pump and eng block are parallel to insure pump lever is under the push rod and not over it. If you can square the pump, finish bolting it in. SB engines are easier. In the front of the eng at the fuel pump there is a bolt, just take it out and stuff a wire tie in and it hits the rod. Holes are for engine mount on cars built back in the 50's. jim

Ok. I got the fuel pump on but I still have hardly any fuel pressure. When I rev it up it bounces back and forth between 0 and 3 pounds and when I let off the throttle it bounces back and forth between 0 and 6 pounds. I do have more pressure seems like with the new pump but not sure if its right. I mainly deak with bike so still learning on chevy V8's. I now its suppose to be 6 lbs but is the pressure gauge suppose to read a even 6 lbs without bouncing around?

I just read on another car site that sometime the fuel line comming out of the tank sometimes cracks and sucks air in causing low fuel pressure. Thats the only thing I guess it could be. Im not to sure about dropping the tank. Is it possible to unbolt the bed and just raise up the side where the tank is? I have a cherry picker but no bed lifter attachment. Has anyone ever did this?

I replaced the 3 gas rubber lines comming off the tank and the 3 under the tank and still had no fuel pressure. When I changed the 3 underneath the bed the 2 bigger lines had fuel in them(got soaked) and the smallest one was bone dry. Does anyone know if this is normal? I cant think of anything else to check that would cause low fuel pressure unless I have a bad pressure gauge. Its a mr gasket from advanced.

Wonder if your cam lobe running the pump is flattened?? Or perhaps the fuel pump push rod is damaged? How about the fuel pickup IN the tank??

I dont know, havent thought about that. How do you check it? Got kinda a dumb question though. When I started it with the bed off the filler tube on the gas tank was open. Will this affect the fuel pressure?
