what transfer case??

i am going to look at a 1968 gmc k10 with the 305 v6 and a 4 speed, i have been told that it should have the rockwell 221 transfer case, is there any chance it would have anything else? I had thought that it might have a dana 20? or were these only used in early blazers? Is there a sure fire way to tell when i am looking at it?

thanks for the help
David

If its a granny gear 4spd it should be the Rockwell T221, I have only seen the Dana 20's behind a 3 spd saginaw.

There ought to be a tag on it somewhere. I dont know what years the 205 and 203s started but they are both decent transfer cases if taken care of.

As far as what I`ve seen only Blazer w/3spds used the Dana20.The trucks and Suburbans I`ve seen have all had the Rockwell 221 or later New Process 205 no matter what trans was used.

you should have a rockwell in there. It will be kinda triangular shaped. the other choise is a NP205 (doubtful), but it be kinda like (2) circle shapes with a connecting portion between them. Yukon has a recent post about finding his leak, with some good pics of both.

The np205 started in 1970. The easiest way to tell is the rockwell rear drive shaft will be low , toward the bottom of the case and the 205 will be high toward the top of the case.

They definitely came in 1969 Blazers, but those were more like a 1970 truck than a '69.

My 70 Blazer has a Dana 20 behind the 4speed.

I believe that sometimes when GM had left over parts they kept on using them in next model years until they ran out.

Re: what transfer case??

My 70 K5 also had a Dana 20 behind it's SM465 pursuant to the prior owner. It was gone when I bought the truck but did have a chrome t/c bezel that wouldn't have been used with the NP205. Also, when I put in an NP205 I had to drop the crossmember down an inch so that helps me confirm that it didn't have an NP205 in there to begin with.
