Auto tranny gurus... HELP!
The tranny in my 'burb is starting to give me fits. It's a T-350 hooked to a NP-205. Instead of putting another t-350 in there, I was thinking of overdrive.
My questions: I've heard that with the correct output shaft on a 700r4, it would bolt right back up to the NP-205 t-case without some fancy adapter that costs more than the 'burb did. Where do I get this output shaft? Is it the output shaft from a t-350? Does someone sell them? Has anyone put a 700r4 in their 4 wheel drive mated to a NP205? What problems/headaches did you have? Next, I'm thinking of a 4l60E or a 4l80E. I'd love to use a 4L80E, but what are the requirements for these transmissions. What computer do I need, does anyone make a computer for the tranny by itself? Has anyone done it? Has anyone dealt with Phoenix Hard Parts (Phoenix Remanufactured Transmissions) (website)? What are they like? Can they rebuild a tranny right? I'd really like to go with someone that is within a 4-5 hour drive (read "in Arizona or New Mexico") in case I have to "hand deliver" their faulty rebuild, but I'm not hung up on it. Thanks for the help guys. |
Output shaft
There is an output shaft available from a place in Phoenix I believe by the name of American Transmission or American Speed.
I have the number somewhere at home. It works with a 700R4 - now called a 4L60. (No -E) |

Alrighty... The adapters to take any GM transmission under the sun into a NP205 case is from Advance Adapters (there's a whole load of places in the Phoenix area that are distributors for them) and you're looking at 150+ for most of those parts. There may be a way to do it the way you're talking, but I don't know it. As far the 4L80E, save up your pennies as they're pretty expensive. You'd ned the computer out of the vehicle you salvaged. While I'm not sure if anyone makes a standalone computer, there's probably a good chance that Jet Performance makes one as they're pretty good at making stuff to retrofit new trannys to old cars. |
output shaft
Please allow me to introduce myself. I am a man of wealth and fame. Oops! I got caried away. I used to be an engineer for GM Powertrain, Hydramatic Division and the tailshaft housing is the same bolt pattern on 4L60 and 350th. The output shaft can be 2 spline counts if I remember correctly. If you find a compatible spline to a 350th/NP 205 design, the output shaft of a 4L60 needs to be shortened. The place in Arizona has them for about 60 bucks. Only bad thing is that the tranny needs to be disassembled to get to it.

Info needed
I'm getting ready to swap a 500 Cad into my '68 short box and I'm pretty sure I've decided to stick with the TH400 that came with the motor. Only problem is, I got the motor out of a '89 4x4 so the tail housing is missing.
This will be the first automatic I've ever owned and know next to nothing about them. I've got a tranny cooler and a finned pan for cooling and all the rest of the "basic" crap out of the way. So here's my question: What (besides the actual EXTENSION ASM. , CASE or tail shaft for everyone not reading an incomplete parts manual) do I need to hook this bad boy up to my driveline? Something has to go inside the housing... http://earljr.brunchma.com/Pics/Misc%20Crap/1968.jpeg |
I think both Jet and TCI make a standalone computer for the 4L80e.
