The best price you will find is the guy who sells them on ebay. You wont beat the price orthe shipping unless Mar-K is running a free shipping special.

Do you just want to replace the wood in the bed for hauling purposes? If so you can just go to your local lumber store and get a nice out door wood basically already cut. You will just have to cut it to size and if you know how to use a table you can even cut the groves in it for the rails to sit in. Dont use redwood though, it is too soft. I forgot to mention that this method would cost you under $200 depending on what you want.

I read about a year ago, someone on here got a cabinet shop to make them up bed wood for about $100. You'd have to have the old wood for them to use as a template, or bring them the dimensions. I've never understood why bed wood is so damn expensive.

If you decide to make it yourself, don't use treated pine lumber. The new treated pine is very corrosive because it uses boron rather than the arsenic used in the old stuff. Fasteners in contact with it (i.e. bed strips and crossmembers) would have to be stainless or hot dipped galvanized to stand a chance in contact with it.

+1 on DIY (if you've got a table saw, a planer and a router - though a dado would probably replace the router nicely).

Then you can get any wood that you would like. My neighbor works in a shop that builds trailers and then use some exotics that he can get me for 'cheap' (meaning, less than usual retail, but probably pretty expensive).
The only bummer about that is I currently park outside and wouldn't want a show bed to be exposed to the sun all the time.

One more thing, I believe Mar-K did a couple of multi-year tests on treating the wood, it would be wise to check that information out too.

Here is a picture of my stepside bed when I had it on my truck. I did the bed in Birch that I bought from Home Depot for $175. I am a carpenter/craftsman by trade so I can do this stuff. These are all off the shelf sizes, nothing special. I made the groves myself with my table saw and a router. My fleetside bed will probably be African Mahogany. I obviously don't use this truck for hauling anymore.

I know each area of the country is different.........but I researched this for about 6 months in my area and to go to the local wood yard or home improvement store and buy the amount of wood you need...It only saved about 15% and then you had hours of planing, routing and table sawing on top of that.

Now that was compared to the best priced wood I could find (shipping included) which is the guy who sells it on Ebay.

One word of advice... Red Oak is not a good outdoor wood. If you are going to use this make sure you keep it out of the elements.

I dont know about your area, but the housing market around here is in the crapper. good for me though, my wood cost under $50 for red oak, but like flletside says, not a good outdoor wood. mine will be under a tonneu cover and only open for fuel and shows.
