The plot thickens...
 

So I started to dismantle the front clip so that I could clean up my firewall and put in a new windshield seal as I have had a leak for a while. The windshield was a piece of cake to take out. I can only hope that it is that easy to put back in! Whoever installed it the last time didn't even use any sealer on the windshield itself! Leak number one. Upon tearing the seal off of the cab I found a little surprise. Leak number two...a hole the size of a dime right in the bottom middle of the windshield. So much for a quick clean up and put it back together...Here are a few pictures...What do you all use to remove the windshield sealer that someone used to adhear the seal to the cab?

You don't need sealer on these trucks. Every one I have had, and replaced, never had sealer under it. More than likely the gasket was just bad and never replaced.

Don't you realize by now that 9 times out of ten when you tear into something on one of these the plot ALWAYS thickens? :lol:

I had my windshield replaced on my '73 by pros about 8 months ago and they didn't use any sealer.

i wonder if that hole started out as someones access to the cab with wiring or something?

i had the same problem, but mine was way way worse than yours, do you have acess to a mig welder?? i even hear there is a product out there thet you can use to glue sheet metal together. you may want to look into that.

Someone definately used some kind of sealer between the cab and the seal. It hardened up just like the rubber. It is even hard to cut with a razor blade. I will have to get it all cleaned off and prepped for the new seal and fix the rust hole. I do have access to a mig welder, so that will definately speed up the process. I will be cutting it out tonight and hopefully welding in some new metal. I hope that it isn't all the way over to the mount for the windshield wiper. It is almost directly in front of the windshield antenna. I was hoping for just a quick little change out of the seal, but as any project there was a speed bump. I need to get the truck inspected by the end of May so I will have to pick up the pace a bit to meet that goal! I want to do a quick clean up of the firewall, inner fenders, and fenders. I think that it is possible as long as I don't run into any more surprises!
