Filling trim holes around rear taillights
I did search several different searches but found no answers
I am planning on biting the bullet and getting Musclerod's rear lights/bezels. This will require me to fill in the holes for the factory trim. I am having help on the bodywork and want to make sure we do it right. Will it be okay to simply fill the holes with body filler or is there a better way to do it? Thanks!!! |
Re: Filling trim holes around rear taillights
If it were mine, I would weld the holes to fill them in.

Re: Filling trim holes around rear taillights
Well, i've never welded, but the guy doing the body work is using a wire feed welder. WIll that work okay or warp the metal? Do i just make sure he goes slow and switches sides? Since the holes are so small do we need small patch pieces or just fill w/ the wire? He's done a great job with the other patches, but they were full panels like rockers and cab corners. Just want to make sure the new (old but new to me) bed isn't boogered up. Sorry, noob here....

No patches will be needed, just take it slow do a little at a time and it will be fine.

Re: Filling trim holes around rear taillights
Weld the holes is the best way and the most permanent. Use a small piece of metal or a short flat head screw as a backing plate and use the wire feed welder to spot the weld in. Hit the spot with the welder and back away to allow for cooling, then fill the weld as necessary. Using a grinding tool with a flapper wheel or a 3-m nylock pad to smooth and prep for body filler. Ensure that you try to cover the spot on the backside with a good paint or weld primer.

Re: Filling trim holes around rear taillights
agree... don't use bondo to fill these holes. There is a very good chance that it will pop or show a small defect in the paint over time.
