air conditioning screech???

we've got a 2000 4x4 hd with a 6.0litre and whenever we run the air conditioning the system will create a loud screech often and at random. anybody ever heard of this problem? what would it take to remedy it?

Thanks,
Dave

Re: air conditioning screech???

1st---if not recently replaced, buy and install a new serpentine belt. If it has been on for more then 50K miles, the rubber gets hard and looses it's grip on the pulleys causing screech---usually when cold but can continue when warm. Cheap, easy fix
2nd---if you have a recent belt on it, then I would suspect either the A/C compressor clutch acting up or the tensioner pulley bearing getting kaka
3rd--no clue, good luck

Is the clutch something we would be able to replace without doing the entire compressor? If so how big of a pita would it be? thanks

Nope, if it is the clutch, you need a new compressor, get a NEW one, not rebuilt, the rebuilds actually last more than a month about 1/3 of the time

Re: air conditioning screech???

Its the compressor locking up. Remove the orifice tube and you will see all of the trash in the system. Replace the compressor the orifice and flush the lines good. Also check the a/c belt tensioner and make sure its not broke, when its been slipping for a long time those will brake. Ive replace lots of those for that problem.
