Re: Project Black from the dead.

Almost forgot to add the plans so far.:dum: Paint will be a silver base followed by a nice coat of red. Leaving stripes like a camaro. 400 small block/TH350 trans(possibly) a 700R4.Everyone wants me to make it a short bed. having done this once before to a 68 ferd, I really dont feel like it this time.Bench will stay, although recovered. There will be some tricks and mods along the way. I will keep posting as progress ensues!

Re: Project Black from the dead.

So, we decided to change the name of the project to "project long haul"

NEW NAME! Project Long Haul.

So here is some progress pics.Cab was too far gone, so it got cut up and scrapped. If anyone has one to get rid of, let me know.http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...k/58a025d2.jpgThis shot shows some of the rot just after the motor was pulled.http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...k/babdf551.jpgBottoms up! yuk!http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...k/DSC02132.jpgUnderside of the bed.http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...k/DSC02131.jpgFrame ready for powerwashing and blasting. Not too bad but will need some tlc.http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...k/DSC02135.jpg Now thats how you clean a frame!http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...k/DSC02136.jpghttp://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...k/DSC02137.jpgThis shot shows the badly rotted arms. these will get replaced. Not sure if we are going to just do a new suspension or if i will fab new arms. There is no way i am going to pay 360 a side for these.

Dude, mine are worse then that, they are flaking like freekin Pillsbury biscuits. Anyway, you can get a pair (not just one side) of very nice after market boxed trailing arms from ECE for like 460ish I think. There are at http://www.earlyclassic.com

that shot does not do the damage justice. they have spread in the middle as well.

Re: Project Black from the dead.

Just get a complete crossmember from a 73-87 and bolt it in.It will fix the rust, give you disc brakes and update your control arms and ball joints.

Re: Project Black from the dead.

they bolt right in? this i did not know. thanks!

Re: Project Black from the dead.

There are plenty of threads on this I believe you have to drill two holes that arent there. You can also just use the upper/lower control arms and spindles from the 73-87 and keep your existing crossmember

Re: Project Black from the dead.

Mine was a 3/4 ton and every hole except 2 line up, so that is what...12 out of 14. I think the 1/2 ton is the same deal, just need to enlarge one hole on each side of the frame and you are good to go on that. Of course, that doesn't fix the Swiss cheese in the back, but hey, one step at a time, right?

Re: Project Black from the dead.

I would say that your cab was more rotted than mine.... but your frame looks better. If you have been away from these trucks for awhile then you would be suprised what they make for them. I just installed an entire floor...
