CS-130 alternator help
I've recently swapped a 98 350 and accessories out of a Z71 into my '68. I'm currently trying to determine what the voltage INTO the alternator should be to excite it. I know if I put in 12v it charges, but on my '97 Lumina, I only measure 10 volts into the alternator.
When I put in the 12 volts into the truck alternator, I get 14 volts. Is this too much voltage? |
14 volts is normal.

Should just be battery volts from an ACCESSORY source. Must come from the accessory side of the key switch. If it comes from the ignition side, it will backfeed the ignition and you can't turn the motor off with the key. Just an extra note.

Can anyone tell me how to wire it? Which pin(s) get voltage? I've feel like I've got a snake by one end but am not sure if it is the correct one. One source that provides great detail is http://www.alternatorparts.com/cs130_sbpage1.htm but it doesn't actually provide specific guidance on doing a one-wire conversion.

According to the stuff you provided fig 3 is the most simple way to hook it up. It is not true one wire hook-up it wants an idiot light to work but I would just hook it up that way. If you are running gauges and do not need the light just hide it under the dash.

Thanks Tom,
You're right, I'm not really looking for a one-wire hookup, just a correct one for this alternator (probably two-wire). What you suggest is what I've gone with so far. I'm mostly looking for validation. Now I've got to determine which wire is truly the L wire. |
