Ack! Exhaust help please...
 

Just got back from a week of leave and drove my truck for the first time since it was fixed up.

What was done:

Tune up, carb rebuild, plugs/wires/fluids, drip pan seals to fix leak, and installed stock manifolds from LMC Truck with new mufflers.

The guy put Flowmaster mufflers on for me. The exhaust setup basically goes like this:

Stock manifolds flowing into stainless steel pipes that then go to flowmaster mufflers and dump beneath the bed. They are true duals with NO H-PIPE or X-PIPE connecting the left or right exhausts. I'm not sure what series flowmaster mufflers they are... but I'm betting they are 40 series.

I requested something quiet and classy with a subtle V8 tone...

These sound like a tinny out of tune 5.0 Mustang, and under load are louder than the old setup (headers w/ rusted Cherry Bombs). In short, they were not what I wanted at all in terms of sound. Everything else is good though, truck seems to be running better but it's been a while since I drove it.

I was wondering what people recommend for mufflers/exhaust.

I'm tempted to say screw it and just have the guy weld in the quietest set he can get so the truck makes no sound at all, which may be the easiest solution.

But if someone has a suggestion, be it a different muffler or something like the necessity of an H-Pipe, then please let me know... I'm looking for quiet and classy but still with a hint of a V8 burble at idle and under throttle. I know this may not be possible on true duals w/ manifolds, though, and if it isn't I'll settle for a super quiet stock-sound muffler.

Im running a dual chamber flowmaster...Its pretty loud under load....


When I switch to my 5.3 im going with Borla mufflers or Magnaflow...

I have heard good things about Magnaflow as well. A friend of mine has them on his Lincoln, and they sound great. There is a slight burble at idle, and no drone at highway speeds. I have been thinking about going with Magnaflows on my Cadillac as well (mostly because I don't want to drop crazy money for either Borla or Corsa).

The H pipe will help a little but the big thing is to get the exhaust out from under the truck, behind the rear wheels or straight out the back. If you're dumping it under the bed with turn downs, the sound is resonating between the road and the bed. Last but not least the 40 series are kind of loud not the muffler of choice for a subdued tone.

you might want some 3 chamber flow masters, or turbo mufflers are nice and quiet. They are kinda cheap, but they seem ok to me.

I HATE the sound of Flowmasters, so I can sympathize with you.
I would recommend Magnaflow or Dynomax mufflers. I have ran Dynomax for years and they sound good at idle and cruising and really throaty when WOT. Magnaflows are noticably louder at idle, but NOT anything like Flowmasters.

A H pipe will help mellow things out quite a bit, infact, whatever muffler you do end up deciding, I would run a H pipe regardless.

I run the Flowmaster 50 series Delta Flow mufflers with long tube heades, H pipe, and pipes out to the rear bumper. These sound really good. Not too loud, not too quiet. Keep in mind, my exhaust exits at the rear bumper, which really keeps the sound away from the cab.

You could try an H pipe start, but if you still don't like those mufflers, the H pipe is a good addition to whatever you decide to do to the rest of the exhaust.

i'm thinking of trying the dynomax hemi super turbo mufflers, i've heard they are one of the quietest mufflers you can put on that will still have a mellow sound.

One of the best sounds I have ever heard personally was a 68 Camaro . It had a 502 , full 3 inch exhaust all the way out and exited behind the rear tire , and had Bassani mufflers . I would think the Bassani muffs would quieten your truck down . I just have never been willing to spend the money to try them . They arent cheap . Frank

I think you would like the dynomax muffers.

Those dynomax hemi super turbo mufflers flow really well also.

I had a similar experience with a single 3" flow 50 on my Blazer- too loud

but i wanted it to sound stone stock ---- the FM's were the wrong choice. A stock 4x4 with a loud exhaust looks like a hillbilly mobile.

Getting the outlet placed out back like a stocker will help a lot though ---- i had a DD s-10 with a 2.8 v-6 that i dumped in front of the axle just to save some temporary coin -- even that was loud in the cab (with the quietest, biggest muffler the shop had)

beware of dyno max the are great on mostly stock or a lower compression motor like at most "9.5:1" or lower. I have a built big block in my 4x4 with a mini huffer on it so, my guess is like 10:1. I have never heard so many complaints of a ****ty sounding exhaust. We just broke in a 455 buick with a cam , intake, headers and 9.0:1 with dyno max turbo mufflers and they are quiet. I am looking into series HD flows or 70 series big block flows or possibly magnaflow 5"x 11"

This is just me. But I hate hate Dynomax superturbos. I have pulled them off of 3 cars I think. I have never heard a more restrictive crappy sounding muffler. I really can't believe anyone is recommending them, but again that is just me. On the other hand, the Dynomax straight thrus, they are called ultra flows--are great. They couldn't flow any better and they are supprisingly very very quiet, yet raw sounding--is the best I can describe. I've started using them on everything. They are cheap and you can pay a little extra and get them in stainless. They might be quiet enough to still use the turndowns.

try some thrush turbos,they are rumbly but not loud,I just put a set on my sons 82 305 and no tailpipes and they're not bad at all,and he does have headers on it too,try to get your mufflers 1 or 2 feet behind the cab and at least 2 or 3 feet of tailpipe

Shouldnt the mufflers be close to the engine for less noise? There is sound that comes off the pipes, and a mufflers job is to make it quiet! So I would think the sooner the muffler could quiet exhuast, would probably result in less harsh noise.

i have never used or recommended flowmaster mufflers, i've owned one set and that was for a week... i have however used countless sets of magnaflow mufflers on my projects...not once have a been dissapointed or had a complaint from anyone thati have installed them for.. by far the best choice for quality,performance,and value... and they are stainless so they will never rust ...borla is the other option but most people like the price of magnaflow better... out here in the so cal pepboys sells them for $89.00 each, pretty decent pricing if you ask me ...

I can't stand Slow-masters either. I have heard lots of good things about Hooker Aerochamber mufflers and the tone they omit. Mike (Swervin Ervin) had them on his truck, and liked them. I think Dave (Lohrtbt) had them as well. They are quieter than most, but not too quiet. I plan on running them on Yeller.

I also have a Hooker Aerochamber. At idle its not loud and has a nice tone. During regular driving it has a nice deeper tone, but not loud. If you really get on it, its a bit loud, but not too bad. Nobody has ever called my truck loud, but a few have told me they like how it sounds. I'll see if I can make an audio of mine for you.

I'd recommend them, they have a nice sound.

I have stock 350, into Edelbrock emission headers, into y-pipe, 3" pipe to cat, 3" pipe to muffler, 3" pipe exits behind drivers rear tire.
