steering wheel questions

I'm thinking about replacing the steering wheel on my '74 pickup because it seems to melt, so to speak, after being in the sun. After being in the sun it gets gooey and sticky. So I got a couple questions,
1. is there any way to make it stop doing this? I've tried armor all and nail polish remover but it only lasts a little while until it gets sticky again.
2. The wheel I have has the small woodgrain trim strip and if I do buy a replacement wheel, is there a special glue to use to put it on the new wheel?

what do you use to clean it? I plan on driving my truck everyday and just wondering what would keep the wheel from doing this again..
