Need help on a bumper/drop hitch.
I need to have my 67 1/2 ton to pull a 2001 dakota and 1991 S-10 to the races. The S-10 should be easy but the dakota on a trailer will cause my weak little stock bumper to brake where its bolted on. I don't think my bumper will ever hold up. What are you guys using to pull a trailer with, drop hitch or bigger bumper? Which is better if any, I know the drop hitch will look better IMO.

Definately go with the Class III, receiver type hitch. They're stronger and safer than pulling with your bumper. Plus if you get into heavier loads- you'll be able to hook up a set of load-balancing torsion bars that keeps weight off the tongue and reduces the deadly tail-whip action that can occur. Also- you can get a "hidden" style that mounts behind a sport bumper, so it's never seen until you use it and looks really good to boot.

yeah get a hitch class 3 or 4 even there are many kits available that are universal and only require drilling hole in your frame for bolts alot of "U-haul" stores sell/install them for like 250 bucks.

Personally, I would never even consider towing that kind of load on the bumper.
Honestly i wish the law enforcement would do more to stop this from happening. |

Well, first of all I didn't really want the bigger stronger bumper to tow with. I'm kind of a drop hitch kinda guy. They are nicer, cleaner lokking, and can be hidden if you perfer them that way. Thanks for the repleys, I really wanted a reciever hitch so the classes really helped me out. Besides U-HAUL, what places can get them, any chance a place that sells truck acessories could get them, they are more on newer years but I was just thinking.

as far as the law aspect, I could care less. I'm talkin safety.
I'll admit I've done crazy things on public roads... some involve towing stuff. But, even with my crazy shenanigans, they were far safer than 1/4 of the stuff I see hooked to a step bumper. I *try* to go by this rule; Figure what will be towed on a regular, or semi regular basis, then put the towing attachments on that are one step higher. |
