Drop Spindle Q's- Move Wheel Out
 

Hey guys. Well, I talked to my dad about lowering my 69 truck and he said that the experience that he and others that he know have had with drop spindles is that they move the wheel out about 5/8" or so and move the steering arm. And this creates bump steer. I was wondering if any of you know which, if any, 2.5" drop spindles move the wheel out and move the steering arm, and which ones, if any, do not move those. I'm going to call around to the different manufactures such as mcgaughy's and western chassis and ece and ask them, but wanted to see what you guys knew.

I have the McGaugheys kit and my wheels were pushed out a little. I wish I had 7" rims instead of 8" or just a skinnier tire.

I can tell you from experience that the ECE spindles do not create any bump steer.

I dont think any of them move the steering arm...I've never noticed the wheel being moved out when ive installed them. I have heard people say that it was moved out when they converted from drum to disc brakes.
Sounds like your pops is looking for an excuse not to lower the truck to me......

:agree: The whole point of drop spindles is to move the wheel up without changing anything else.

I have a McGaughey's kit and I just flipped my rims to 7" (had 8").

probably go with a spacer out back sometime.....

Hey guys. I've called around and ECE says the wheels are pushed out 1/4" from the stock 71-72 spindles on each side, CPP says thiers push the wheel out a little but they have new spindles that actually suck the wheel in, but it uses a bolt on bracket for the caliper, which is just bad news if you ask me. ANd Performance online, who sells Western Chassis spindles say they don't think and they cant find anywhere that says it moves the wheels out. So I'm going to try and get a hold of Western Chassis and ask them directly.
Yeah I know the "point" of drop spindles is to move the wheel up, but if you have a stock 71-72 disk truck, go take a look and see if there is enough room to move the wheel up 2.5 inches without having the wheel hit the spindle. On lots of drop spindles, they have to move the wheel out and reposition the steering arm in order to get things to fit.

And no my dad is not looking for a reason to lower the truck. Its my truck and he has no problem dropping it. Hes done it to all his vehicles except his 91 truck. In order to get the nicest ride, you want to stay with the longest spring you can, because drop springs are stiffer than stock springs, and just get stiffer as they get shorter. If turns out that the Western Chassis spindles don't move anything, then I'll go with them. If they do, then when my dad gets back from Alaska in October, hes going to weld me up some drop control arms. Hes says probably about 1.5" is as far as he might be able to go. So those with some drop springs will get me the height I want. So I'll just have to see.
