Another budget 5.3 build...
I wanted a taste of the fuel injection world, and the opportunity to buy a real cheap swap setup arose, so here I am. I want this to cost under 2k, which I think I can pull off. Engine is a 5.3 out of a rolled '05 truck with 4l60e. The combo has 37,000 miles, and I got to pick whatever I wanted from the truck...so I came home with a truck full of crap...hehe :metal:
My 1,300 mile 350 rebuild came out easily and was sold to a fellow board member- http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...k_pics_094.jpg And tomorrow I am starting on the new engine. Cleaning it up real good, making adapter plates, and maybe start test fitting. I'm planning on doing the wiring myself, and using the factory tank from the '05. The only mod it will really have at this point will be a tune. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...k_pics_098.jpg http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...s/SANY0071.jpg http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...s/SANY0069.jpg |

Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
Put in 10 hours today, this is how she sits. I pulled it out after this to enlarge a few holes and clean and paint the frame.

Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
Been enjoying it for a few weeks, but I'm not completely done. Alot of cleaning up to do with wiring and small stuff.
I just built the intake and haven't got a chance to pick up a clamp, so that's why there isn't one if you are wondering. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...uckpics106.jpg |
Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
Looks good I have an 05 DOD 5.3L with a 4L60 as well to drop into my 4dr burb build. It came out with 23k on it. EFI is the only way to go in my book!

Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
What are you plans for the A/C?
|
Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
How close did you come to the budget?
|
Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
I haven't figured up my tickets, but if I'm thinking right I am pretty close.
Eventually I plan to use the '05 compressor by making new lines. Fuel injection is awesome, it will be very hard to use another carbed motor in a project. |
Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
Nice install!

Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
Nice choice. Is that going in the truck in your avatar? One looks blue, the other gold.
|
Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
Yeah, my avatar is the truck before I painted it. I'm now painting it again since it's a '68 Chevy instead of a GMC.

Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
Looks good!! What did you do for motor mounts?
|
Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
I made plates out of 1/4" and welded clamshells to them.
|
Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
I see you did the wiring yourself, can you tell me what wires you had to remove or combine?
|
Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
Well, I removed a lot of unnecessary things like the lights, but as far as actually wiring it to run, I had a set of wiring diagrams that I went through and hooked to my existing wiring to make it run. Take a look at LS1tech and do some searching, and you will find your answers. What year motor do you have?

Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
o I dont have a motor yet just trying to get an idea of how involved the wiring removal is
|
Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
It's not really that bad. Much easier than I thought it would be!

Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
Nice job, question,,,,when u swap a 5.3, where do you get the vacum for
the brake booster? |
Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
I believe the 5.3 has provisions for you to pull vaccuum from the intake for the booster, just like in the 99+ truck you pull it from.

Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
I even used the factory '05 hose. It sticks out, but works for now!

Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
drman929 What where the unecessary codes or things u had to remove
from your pcm? Did u use your stock tailamp brake switch for the tranny locking sensor? I have the same motor tranny setup that I just got out of an avalanche (8900) miles. I dont know much about mechanical stuff but I know I can do the swap into my 72 with some help of the pros in this site, any help will be appreciated. :ito: |

Wow, nice pullout!!! I am really loving mine, it has so much more power than my 350. It will snap your neck back! :metal: |
Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
drman so u ended up using the 05 fuel setup? isnt the 05 fuel tank a little
big for our trucks? How u did this?, also, whats the other black plastic line running along with the fuel line on the engine?? is that line used when performing the swap? thanks :ito: |
Re: Another budget 5.3 build...
For now, I put the factory tank in a toolbox in the bed. The other line is for the evap stuff, not necessary.
