cutting coils and pulling leafs

well i got the wheels off my truck stripping them down and painting them, so i figured while its sitting there id cut the coils and pull some leafs. i know in my ranger and s-10 2 coils gave me almost 3". how many coils should i cut to get me in the 2-2.5 range. and also how many leafs should i pull to get in the 4-5 range. i know this isnt the best thing to do, but im gonna bag it when i get the funds and probably wont drive it much at all untill then.
any help would be great. thanx

A good rule of thumb on coils is: 1/2 coil = 1 inch of drop. Your going to have to pull a bunch of leaves to get 5 inches of drop. I would use a flip kit instead.

It's not going to bounce everywhere. And you don't have struts.

You will need a flip to get that much in the rear. I got mine from DJM.

Re: cutting coils and pulling leafs

Cutting coils increases the spring rate, so the truck will ride stiffer. In a pick-up truck this usually translates to "bouncy" because of the seat. Older truck seats were a lot more of the "suspension" than their modern counterparts.
This shorter ride height may also cause the suspension to bottom-out on the bumpstops, especially if you go too far.

You are not going to be able to remove enough leaves from the rear to drop that much. If you could possibly get that much static drop, it would be un-drivable. The one or two leaves that you left on would wrap like crazy. It would be way to soft.

Ignore the kids that don't know anything other than struts

Longhair is right ... ignore the kids talking about struts.

Politely request that they stick with something they have experience with ... like putting decals on their Hondas.

Re: cutting coils and pulling leafs

stump there is a big difference between "cut" coils, and "heated" coils. Those that don't know better try heating their coil springs which softens the spring, reduces the tempering, and eventually leads to collapse.

If a coil spring is cut properly using minimal heat, it will work just fine with out fear of failure.
