Outside the box Ideas!!
3 Attachment(s)
I thought I would start a thread about all the outside the box Ideas people come up with. I like most always look for a better and cheaper way to get the out come I am looking for on my truck. I though I would share some things I though of. Please post your ideas also.
Pic number 1 has a Steering wheel from an AMC Eagle SX4. It looks similia to the Buick GS and Cutlass sport wheel. AMC used alot of GM stuff in the 70's so the spline and the horn are a direct fit. I had to find a different horn button for the horn pad. The old wiper knob fit perfect. Also the armrest are from an early 80's Datsun pickup Pic 2 has a clock from a 73-77 Grand prix. Its the perfect size for the fuel gauge or speedo hole. Pic 3 is an overhead console from a 90's Suburban. It needs some caressing to fit the roof, but overall it fits. |
Re: Outside the box Ideas!!

Re: Outside the box Ideas!!
Here are a few of mine I have done on the 71.
I know what you are thinking the electric pump bowl ant no big deal but I also added the spray nozzels also. I also used a caddy air box for the cold air intake. 2 couplings 1 90 from lowes. Sucking 4" diameter of cold air. http://216.77.188.54/coDataImages/p/...0/DSC00608.JPG http://216.77.188.54/coDataImages/p/...wiperspray.JPG My own one peice window conversion http://216.77.188.54/coDataImages/p/...9/DSC00576.JPG |
Re: Outside the box Ideas!!
wow, I think that's the first time I've ever seen someone delete the vent window.
Very creative Rscam- I like those armrests... |
Re: Outside the box Ideas!!
Very nice, RS.
Izzat an Alpine CDE-9852? I like the way you did the installation. If it is, I love mine to death. |
Re: Outside the box Ideas!!
out of curiosity, what are those mirrors from, andy4639?
also do the armrest interfere with the door levers? thanks |
Re: Outside the box Ideas!!
The mirrors are Street Scene I beleive. I order them from Stylin' way back. Here is a link.

Re: Outside the box Ideas!!
I positioned the armrest where I could squeeze the door latch handle with the armrest handle. Like you would squeeze pliers. If I positioned the latch handle on the post at the wrong angle it would hit the armrest before the door unlatched. It took a while to get the position correct but It works perfect now.

here are some pics of map pockets from an 80's Volvo. I am going to try one of these when I find some. Also here is a Volvo armrest similar to the Datsun truck, but the handle is not so vertical and the grain is different.

Re: Outside the box Ideas!!
It's not much, but I came up with a functional map light for my Panel.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y55...install006.jpg It's from a 88 or so F*rd pick up. I'm not sure if it will work on trucks, 'cause I don't think they have this screw like the 'Burb's and Panels do: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y55...install003.jpg I guess a guy could tap a hole there, though, but on a truck you could put it where the dome light is, anyway. That gasket is a cheap (like 3 for a buck) mouse pad from wally world. They make great gaskets for this kind of thing. |
Re: Outside the box Ideas!!
I think Andy's AC conversion is one of the best, it's not flashy, but very nice. Great job.
rscam: whats up with that dash?? Is every dial differnt then stock?? What's in the temp guage spot?? |

I think my '67 C-30 turbo diesel dually qualifies as outside the box! I had to shorten the frame, add a wider '97 C3500 14 bolt rearend, built bed mounts and added a bed, and cut down stepside fenders to achieve a factory-like dually look. The engine is a military CUCV 6.2L diesel with '93 6.5TD turbo equipment, marine injectors, SS Deisel fast heat injectors, DSG Stud Girdle, turned up 4911 injection pump, modified wastegate controller, a custom built pressure chamber (built from 1970 Porsche air cleaner) and a custom cold air intake tube. Since Detroit Diesel designed these engines, I painted it Detroit Alpine Green to keep it era-correct since this is the color Detroit was using in 1967. I should have the diesel installed and running within the month.

Here's some unfinished and finished pics of the pressure chamber I recently completed. I cut the flange and oil bath part of the porsche air cleaner off, and mated it with bottom section of the factory diesel air cleaner to fit the intake. It would have been much easier to go with a 6.5TD intake (and I do have one), but I wanted an old school look to change it up a little.

Re: Outside the box Ideas!!
Nice Ideas folks. I don't know about you all, but I try to find new ideas out of a lack of money and I can sit back and look at my little tricks and feel a little proud that I thought of it.

Here is one for you. I had a nice set of 6 lug rallys and no truck to put them on so we built a truck out of 5 different trucks to put the rallys on.
The result is a '67 swb stepper. Now I get to try all kinds of neat ideas on my new project. Nothing too pretty to look at , but here is a picture. I don't know if this is considered outside the box, but it sure is different. Danny |
Re: Outside the box Ideas!!
Shyguy that truck would look good with about 2" lift and 33's. Like a prerunner.

GREASEMONKEY72,
Is that your answer to a hard tail Harley? It's what we call a bar hopper here in SC. Short rides only.:lol::lol::lol: |
Re: Outside the box Ideas!!
Here's another one. 70-73 Camaro taillights. Cut the reverse light off each side and turn the remaining running light 90 degrees. I welded studs on the inside before I painted it. The way the light bevel at an angle on the Camaro is the perfect angle for the stepside fender when turned 90 degrees.
