Inline 6 cyl club members

Hi guy's 54blackhornet here up in Northeast Oregon looking for some help
with my 68 GMC 1500 custom wide LWB.Gold with white roof, it is a 59000 original mile survivor.
I replaced the 250 with a 89 mexico block 292 bored 30 over, but the stock 3spd just does not work well with the extra torque of the 292! Can anyone suggest what trans i should try ? I would like to keep the three on the tree so as not to cut the virgin low hump floor. Also I would like to see some more threads from the stock 6cyl fans! come on with gas around $4.00 I know you are out there!

how is the tranny not holding up?
If I'm not mistaken, that's the same 3 speed in the V 8 aplications

And way off topic... what is that in your avatar? You have any bigger pics of it you can post?

54 Husdon Hornet stepdown. 308 flat head 6, 3spd with overdrive! the first real nascar champion! Herb Thomas & Tim Flock drove the Fabulous Hudson
Hornets to a record setting string of nascar wins from the late 40's to the end in 1954.:metal:

LHM, it's also BLACK!

I have a 250 and 3 speed in mine. You are probably wanting to reduce the rpm's while cruising. Most of the old 6's were geared for hauling and have low(higher numerically) rear gears.Taller tires will help but a gear ratio may be needed to get what you are looking for. With the 3:73's I run close to 3000 rpm at 60 .Modern drivetrains run about 2000 at 70.You are probably noticing the difference.
If you are having tranny's go bad you may have other problems.

I've got a T-5 in my truck from an '89 Camaro. It's much more fun than a stock 3 speed. They're not difficult to install but won't hold up to alot of torque from that 292.

I've also got a stock Saginaw 3 speed on the parts forum if you're interested.

With that 292 bored over .30, you ought to get at least 1-2 MPG better than a 350. Jk

For real though, I wonder what kind of mileage you will get. I have heard that a 292 in not much better than a small V-8

In my experience, the 292 is worse than a small block. I've have 2, and they were both hawgs! The 250's I've had on the other hand were pretty decent.

I ran a saginaw 3spd(4 of em ) behind a .060 over 283....broke em all> Guess I shouldnt have been shiftin @ 6800!LOL! Well, the old 283 (292 sb) didnt run too damn shab , with 1.940 fuelies, a 350 hp 327 cam, & a 600 DP Holley on top. Forget about low end tork.....3200-6800, that little biochy was in the powerband. The only trans that I didnt break in that truck was an M-21 Muncie> And Im sure that 292 inline has way more tork in the low end....crazyL

I knew of a guy that had a 4spd car trans (BW,Saginaw,or Muncie"M") rigged to shift through the column lever. Can`t tell ya how he managed that. But,he did it.
I owned a`68 with a 396/3spd.The lack of another gear seems to stress them.We ask an aweful lot out of second gear.

My dads truck has a 250 in it & so does his burb, but I think the burb engine is going in his truck sooner or later

What we hope to have it looking like some day (minus the windshield)
