Bought this 1964 Crew Cab on Craigslist
Hey guys, I dont frequent this section of the board to often as I havent done much with this style of truck. I own a few 67-72 trucks but stumbled across this find on craigslist last week. I bought this truck from the original owners son. It was purchased new in Nevada in 64 I have the original window sticker and sales receipt. its on a 127 wheelbase with 3/4 ton suspension. My original plans for this truck was to convert it to half ton on bags with a fullsize 6 foot fleet short bed (currently 5 foot bed). Im just curious to see how rare these things are before i get to cutting and whether or not i should try to keep it original and find something else to cut up. i also have a 65 burb and i was never really into these trucks too much but a crew cab short fleet laid on 20/22s sounds really interesting to me. i planned on building the back half of of square tubing and doing a dropmember on the front. anyhow, just looking for some feedback. thanks in advanced. the trucks only been in nevada and colorado so rust is at a minimum but the poor girl was used as a work truck all its life so it is a little beat.

Re: Bought this 1964 Crew Cab on Craigslist
Hey sounds like a great find - CONGRATS!!
I too have one of these rare crew cabs w/t 161" wb. How bout some pics? I've not see many of these in short bed - if any. Mine too was a work horse & camper in it's past. It's now been a daily driver since I drove it home from Napa, CA in Jan 05. I guess 20"+ is OK. It depends on the overall look your going for. IMHO I'd stay away from the big wheels stuff. Thats just me. Also leaving mine a 3/4 ton buy using a 14bff rearend with 3.42 gears. Disc brakes in rear now & front to be done soon. baggin it eventually. Good luck with your new toy! |

No pics, c'mon you know better than that...............:D. If you didn't want to get crazy with the back, you could easily find the rear of a short/long bed frame and graft it on. That's pretty much what I did on my 67. Can't wait to see it.

Re: Bought this 1964 Crew Cab on Craigslist
I would do whatever makes you happier. Ive been told numerous times that I have ruined a perfectly good classic truck. But its what makes me happy and thats all I care about. I think you should lay it out personally. If its rare that just means it will get that much more attention.

Re: Bought this 1964 Crew Cab on Craigslist
There is no reason not to modify the frame, they made millions of 127 inch 3/4 ton 60-66 frames.
the cab - a different story... check out my member gallery, I have about 100 different crewcab shots. |

oops i guess i have to resize the pics only one went through.....anyone know if a 72 rear frame section is the same as 64-66? i have a 72 shortbed rolling frame laying at the shop wondering if i could use the rear clip and just put a 60-66 style bed on it?

picked up this 64 longbed yesterday from a buddy of mine to take the bed and rear frame off of to graft onto my truck. im not keeping it a long bed im going to modify the length. i guess now its a matter of deciding what length of bed to go with. i could take the 12 and 8 and be at standard shortbed length. but im thinking of taking less off the back as ive always thought the profile of these trucks makes the rear of the rear fenders to tailgate section really stubby looking. maybe ill take 12 off the front and 6 off the back? 14 front 6 back? any suggestions. im sure lots of you here are more familiar with these trucks than i am and have good thoughts on ways to improve. thanks again, john

doors/rear passenger area is bit shorter than mine but the added bed length would look SWEET!!! similar to:

Re: Bought this 1964 Crew Cab on Craigslist
cool thanks for the photshop jon. i think im kinda leaning towards keeping it the standard shortbox length. ive already taken the 12" out of the front of the longbox today. ill get it tacked back up and then decide how much i want to lop off the rear. im thinking ill either take the standard 8" off or maybe just take 6" and leave it a hair longer behind the rear wheel openings.

Re: Bought this 1964 Crew Cab on Craigslist
hey thanks. wb on my rig 161". The rear passenger area has 1 door on passenger side and fake door on drivers side. lots of room in the back seat area. rear doors are full size but window & frames are larger/longer than stock. Rear glass is dual pane vs stock single sheet. Think I'm gonna suiside the rear doors - making the fake door real and having the door handles to the front of the door. Should be interesting.
Lookin forward to seeing your 64 Crew come alive! |

here are some pics of some that I think have short boxes...
there were several different coach companies that built these, so the boxes ended up all different lengths. these are the best angles of the shots that I have. |
