99 jimmy brake problems
 

I own a 99 jimmy and just finished doing the rear brakes. The passenger side brake pads were completely worn down, and the driver side had some life left on them. I didn't think much of it at the time, but after replacing the rotors, calipers, and pads the passenger side caliper won't release. I'm not sure what the cause is, but I need to get it fixed right away. Anyone have an idea what's wrong?

I know this is in the wrong forum, but I'm in a rush to get it fixed and most people seem to hang out here. I have a 99 jimmy with 4 wheel disc brakes. I just finished doing the rear brakes. While doing them I noticed that the right hand pads were completely worn out and the left side still had quite a bit of life left on them. I replaced the pads calipers and rotors. Bled them and took it for a test ride. The right side caliper won't release for some reason. I tried bleeding them again and that did not help? I think whatever is wrong has been this way for a little while as the old ones were worn unevenly. I need to get this fixed by tommorrow afternoon so any thoughts will be helpfull.

One of the rear calipers may be sticking causing the other side to do all the braking. It may be noticeable when driving as it should pull to one side when stopping or one wheel might lock up. You can buy a caliper rebuild kit for it but you'd be ahead to buy a remand caliper loaded with new pads and just swap them out, bleed and go.

Everything is brand new on both sides. The driver side works fine. The passenger side caliper won't open up at all. I've got both wheels off right now and without the brakes on the drivers side turns by hand (when in neutral) and the passenger side won't turn at all. When the brakes are on both sides don't turn.

Can you exchange the one in question since they are new. Does it have the ebrake built into it? It could be hanging?

Check your rubber brake lines. They are known to collapse internally and not allow fluid to return, thus causing the caliper not to open. It's best just to replace both of them.

This is part of the reason GM only went with rear disc's on trucks for a few years and now are back with drum brakes. If the new caliper wouldn't release when pressure is off, I suspect a line, check valve, proportioning valve issue.

Mash the pedal and see if it sticks.If it does open the bleeder, if it frees up it is the hose if it deasnt it is a caliper problem

This actually happened to me many years ago. Old age and brake fluid makes them swell and with the power brakes, there's enough pressure to force fluid through but the residual is not strong enough to return the fluid.

On mine the rear axle brake hose was bad. I went ahead and replaced all rubber lines-- front and back.
