1997 Silverado rear axel bearing
I'm getting ready to change my rear axel bearings... was wondering if I will need a special tool to remove the bearings from the rear end housing? Or wil they slid right out -- wishful thinking i know...
Any help would be appreciated.... Vic |
Well, there is a special tool we use but you can make one with no problem.
Take a peice of all thread (3/8) and a large heavy washer 2.5" in diameter. Grind off 2 edges making it an oval. Also grind out the middle in an oval shape. Put a nut and washer on the all thread, then slide this into the axle end, manuver the washer so it sits flush BEHIND the bearing. Use another nut to start pulling the axle bearing out. Make sure you pull the seal first or this will not work. The actual tool attaches to a 5lb slide hammer and takes a few good pulls to get the bearing out... so this method may take a little time. |
Thanks... I'll give your tool a try... and you never know that I may have to go buy some new tools :o)
