68 GMC 4x4 Pics
4 Attachment(s)
Forced inside by Ike, so I decided to try and post some pictures. Added a couple of the GMC 305 V6 since most people are not familiar with them. A lot of folks don't like them, but I do. I had custom pistons made to give me 9:1 compression and installed GMC Magnum heads. The Magnum heads have 2.25 intake and 1.875 exhaust valves for pretty good flow. Desk top dyno says it is around 250 hp with 300ft-lb at 2000rpm. I switched from 4.56 to 3.73 gears with posi front and rear. The new front Dana axle has power disk brakes. I installed a 2.5 inch soft ride lift all around for looks and comfort. Got some buddy buckets redone on the inside, otherwise a plain stock interior.
I am now finishing up a NV4500/NP205 combo to be installed in a few months. Plan to remove the cab for this job, so I will add a Vintage Air conditioning system too. My long term mod is a new engine. I am currently building a 454 V6 from a 478 V6. The 478 uses a big truck crank and flywheel, but a 305 V6 crank will fit and allow using the original flywheel. The cranks have different strokes, so that is where the 454 ci comes from. |

Nice to see a unique engine in one of these.Even though the V-6 was offered most decide to go with a small block.I like my inlne but the V is certainly different.I didn't5 know you could build a 454 from the factory parts though.

What distributor did you use to get the HEI? Nice looking truck, the mods are geat and it will still look stock. With the torque you develope the 3.73 change was a good idea. How much shorter is the 454 stroke from 478? Off the top of my head it seems like maybe 1/4". What rods and pistons will you use? |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Pics
That is a great looking original truck!
Nice work, and I personally love the 305! |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Pics
You should top off the engine with a set of the plaid valve covers, just to get more second looks.

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Pics
NICE! I like the GMC V6s. I can't even imagine how cool the 454 V6 will be.

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Pics
Great looking truck, Erl! The V6/NV-4500 combo sounds interesting. You used 427 pistons for the 9.0:1 compression in the 305, right?

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Pics
OH MAN I LOVE THAT TRUCK!!! I've got a 401 block and set of 351 Magnum heads that I'm dying to put in the something! My hat goes off to you going down the road less traveled with the V6!
