Why is this tranny leaking
700R4 and brand new never run.
I read on a website it would need 6 qts. to fill. I filled her and later noticed a big puddle underneath. It is dripping fluid out the tailshaft. I hope I just put too much fluid in it. How many qts. does it take????? _________________________ |
Re: Why is this tranny leaking
The Bowtie Built 700R4 in my 1957 Nomad required 13 quarts to fill. My trans oil pan is a little deeper than factory. My 700R4 had a leak where the dip stick enters the trans body. I replace the leaky Lokar dip stick with a Gotta Show dip stick. Stopped about 95% of the drip.

Re: Why is this tranny leaking
Is it dripping at the driveline? If it is "new" but has been sitting for a while the seal could shrink or deform a little. I've had some weep a little until they were ran for a while so they could heat up and seal. If it was just rebuilt it could have gotten damaged during install or when the driveline was installed.

Re: Why is this tranny leaking
If the seal has shrunk it should swell with the fluid soaked in. I'll check it in the AM and see if it is still dripping.

Re: Why is this tranny leaking
If you are lucky that is what happened. In the 80" I had a friend that found a 69 Porsche 911 that had been stored for 15 years with only 15K on the clock. He thought it was great to have a "new" car. Ended up tearing the whole thing apart to replace all the rubber, seals, belts, etc. that had dried out in our desert climate.

Re: Why is this tranny leaking
Is it in the truck?
Have you got a drive shaft in it? If its in the truck have you run it to get fluid into the converter. Maybe the trans is over full because no fluid has moved into the converter. |

Brian
The driveshaft is new custom made and installed. I have not run the engine as it is a new crate 350 and I have not finished wiring and installing the radiator. I can see the drip is coming from a small hole in the center of the yoke. Can I plug this up and stop the drip. |
