Shortening A 1972 LWB.
I have been wanting to chop my frame for a long time now. Im going to do it soon. my only question is will a stock wood floor box fit on the frame without modifications, or will i need to move the mounts, or make new ones. Help would Be appreciated. Cheers

You should have no problemo if u cut the 12 inches under the cab,and 8 inches on the rear of the frame, remove the extra set of bed supports behind
the cab before cutting the 12 inches under the cab,, u wont need them anyways cause u are going shorty. All the holes of the stock short bed should line up to the rest of the frame bed mounts (holes) if u do the frame shortning correctly. Theres a few threads in this web site about this mod. Evert thing I've read or seen says that if you cut the frame under the cab (1 ft.) and 6" of the back I'm not sure that their would be a problem with the bed fitting, but you will have to remount the rear cab mounts. If I'm not mistaken this only requirers unbolting the cab and drilling or torching a couple of new holes.The bed just bolts on you get new cab mounts You don't have to remove the cab to do this just jack the cab corner up it'll be a good time to rust proof the area, weld it up with a reinforcing insert you might even mount you a new gas tank under their while youre at it.
I have a 72 LWB I'm considering doing the same thing to my self ,but I'm going for a daily driver and the long bed is handy.I can have a tool box and my Bike in their too.I don't care how nice the trailer is I feel better with my baby on board. |

There is a lot of different information in the FAQ forum. Scroll down to the bottom of this page and you will see the "Forum Jump" box. Click on the little down arrow on the right side of the box and scroll down to "FAQ Truck Tech". On that page go down to "Thread / Thread Starter: FAQ Index thread". When you get into that scroll through the different sections and you will find answers to questions you haven't even thought of yet....;) I could have just posted a direct link but there is a lot of good info in the FAQ section and now the people that read this thread will know how to get to it. Thanks to Krue for indexing the FAQ's I shortened a frame using the instructions in the FAQ and it worked out great. I think there are also threads on installing air bags and static drops. I read through that forum, LOTS of usefull stuff, but they didnt say if the box uses the stock mounts or if you need to make new ones.

Nope, it won't make any difference whether it's steel or wood. I used to have a wood floor and put in a steel floor instead.

I did it on mine, although mine was a long bed cut short the wrong way by clipping off only at the end and moving the rear end up. I corrected this jerry-rig by locating a shortbed frame and welding it in place starting under the cab.
By cutting in the middle and on the end, you are effectively removing all the longbed sections and just leaving a shortbed frame so yes, the stock mounts will be in the right position. Here's my conversion: http://www.grossepointegothic.com/71stepside/FrameSwap/ Don't forget the Frame Stiffener Support from Early Classic. Might want to consider bolting them in too, I welded mine and hmmm, I see it is going to make removing the crossmember difficult, it not impossible if I need to pull the tranny. |
