powder coating wheels?
 

Hi all

I have got a full set of truck rally's for my 86 today,and a new set of 255/60R15 BFG T/A's also:D


I was thinking of having them(the rallys) powder coated rather then painted silver so the apperance will last a little longer.I have heard that powder coating is more durable then typical paint and can near match any color I wish.Calling around I can get them coated for $25 per rim if allready stripped to bare metal.

I was wondering how many,if any have done this,and what are your opinions on it?

my friends dad got the wheels on his 69' 302 z28 camaro powder coated.


they look great:D if i were using rallies, i would go for it

Powdercoating
 

Powdercoating is the way to go, stuff is tough as nails.
Ask to see some parts that the shop has done, just like anything else, some shops are better than others.

Is powdercoating the rally wheel cost effective? How about using Hammerlite paint which itself is a hard coating and you can get it in grey hammertone @ $5/can. With a 3" stainless steel trim ring and center cap, very little of the wheel is exposed. Thought this might be a cheaper alternative. You got to have good preping for powdercoat to last. Company where I used to work, had one of the best powdercoat system and we had lots of rejects because the parts weren't clean enough. After time the contaiminants migrated to the surface beneath the powdercoat and blistered through. Still its best if the parts were clean & oil free with either method. Thought I'd just put my 2 cents in. :D

87SilveradoSWB:you gave me a good idea for some rims i might use for my winter snow tires.i have another set of rallys(albiet really beat up)but still useable for winter driving duties.


I was planning on stripping them to bare metal via sand blasting ,the ones i was gona' have powder coated,unless that wont take enough of the contaiminants off them?

Maybe I am just strange,but I would rather spend $100 on original rallys off my truck then the $200+ on some aftermarket ones from a local shop?I kinda have a fondness for rallys weather they be the truck or corvette/camaro ones.
