New guy with truck
 

Hi every one I am new to sit it is assume! Just what I been looking for. I have a 1956 Chevy truck I got for my son and I in 2001 he was 16 years old at the time but have not goton around to work on it all these years, bout it when we lived in Palmdale, CA and towed it Washington in 2004. Well now that I am retired it time to get started I am hoping to get lots of my information from you guys this is the first project of this kind and we will need lots of help. Here is what I have, 1956 chevy truck big window, long bed, 350 engine, 350 auto Tran on the floor, power brakes, nice chrome rims 6 lug, the cab is in good shape not cut up. (Or plans) LONG BED? well I bout a short bed in good shape and a book on how to cut frame and shorten it??? scared lol. next front suspension? I bout a 1978 LT Camaro in good shape no clue on how to do that I been looking for a video on that but no luck yet really scared LOL. I have not used a welder in over 28 years so I will need to get info on what welder to buy? Well that's what the plan is so far cant wait to get started. I will post pic's as soon as I now how. Well grate to be among you guys I have a lot of thead to read.

There'a a bunch of good info on here about these trucks. I paid someone to weld my IFS to the front end of another swb truck. I started out with a lb and traded my mom for her sb. For what ever reason, she likes the long bed look. We really like pics!

Thanks John I will check them Lincoln MIG out for sure.

Daniel U My wife likes the long bed as well? but it has to be a sb.

When you start a new thread or reply to one there is a "Manage Attachments" button. When you click it you get a window that allows you to browse your computer for pics. Click on the pic you want and then upload it. There is also a insert image button on top of the text box (looks like 2 mountains and a moon) . When you click it you can insert pics from another site by pasting thier properties in the text window that appears. Hope this helps.

are you in vancouver area? lots of info on this site. pretty good article on the hamb website about subframing a TF truck. lots of great pic's.

Hey 56classictruck guy, welcome and looks like you have a good project on your hands. Thats awsome that you and your son are getting to work on it together. I've been working on my 59 stepside with my dad and so far its been good times. As far as info on the camaro clip, read this forum http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...ht=camaro+clip he layed it out pretty good on how every thing should work. I just clipped my truck and it seemed pretty easy just having a torch, grinder and welder. My only objections were that he noted to add 2 more inches to the wheel base of his truck, even though he only said that for 58 and 59 trucks I found out the hard way that it should have been the stock wheelbase. So if your going to clip it definetly check that out. As far as welder the smaller 110 lincoln migs are nice units, i got one used and it works awsome for sheetmetal but i would feel more comfortable with a bigger machine like millermatic 250 or lincoln powermig. theyre great all around machines that you can weld sheetmetal up to thick frames with ample power. look around locally for deals on craigslist on used machines because theres alot of them out there. 56Chevy1300, awesome I read your post 3 times I was going to E-mail you on that video, so thank you for the information, I had a good time seeing how you are building your 56 I was inspired by it to get my 56 off the ground. I hope i can ask a question or too your way.

Nice truck! - Big window kinda rare.

I have a '57 Big window that I'm doing a frame up rebuild on too. I bought it in Riverside CA in 1989.

Are you scrapping any parts on the '78?

Hi Kenny Riverside CA yes been there many times I grow near there in Lawndale, CA I got my 56 in CA to. Hay what seat are you going to put in your truck?? Do you no what car or van truck with tilt steering that will work good with the camaro sub? O and yes the 78 camaro will be scrap.

Well, good luck with the welder purchase. I wouldnt go with anything less powerwise then the 180 lincoln and moreover anything besides miller, lincoln, or hobart. If you do get one, get it setup to use co2 and the quality and finish will be alot better then a flux core setup.

Well I no my welding sucks LOL. 110 mig don't work to good for me... I went out and got me a Lincoln 180 mig got my tank and redid it and boxed in to...

Nice project! Not knocking your welding but the weld in the photo looks to be "contaminated". Are you getting the area to be welded clean of any paint, rust or other residue? If the weld is not smooth usually means it is getting oxygen from some source such as a contaminant or either the shielding gas is not sufficient. Just my 2 cents.

O no Kateaux, you are right, that was my first weld and I didn't think that some paint in the way would be bad I no now!! my welder I used flex wire and was not very good.. So I had to REMOVE all welds, and got me the Lincoln 180 welder with tank man it works NICE and made sure I got all contaminant out!!!!
