Finally got a 72 suburban

Picked this suburban up last weekend in Austin thanks to Critters tip. I have been looking for an unmolested, highly optioned factory big block burb for quite a while. It extremely rust free with one small rust spot above the windshield. Other than that is is very straight except where someone backed into something around the tail lights. It has the original 402, turbo 400 trans, and posi trac rear end. It also is a deluxe and I believe it had 22 options listed on its glove box door. My plans are to get it mechanically sound and drive it around as a solid original survivor.

All of the rockers, fenders, doors, and floorboards dont even have a single pinhole in them.

The spare tire carrier is dirty but in good shape.

The interior is a little worn but still presentable. Wish someone hadnt cut into the rear A/C box however.

Just a pic of the dash.

The original 402. With all the smog stuff. I really want to keep this as an unmolested original; but I also really dont want the smog stuff under there either.

Sounds like I helped get it into the right hands, congratulations. So what exactly was it needing, a new fuel line or tank, or...???

On the speaker holes... you can put some speaker grills over them, and paint them white to hide them... until you can locate a new A/C box to replace it with.
Good lookin burb there.

That looks very similar to mine when I first got it. Mine was a 396 with the same mirrors, trim, and rack. That looks like a sweet score!

Hell, just go ahead and put some speakers in there. I don't advocate the cutting of the holes, but if they are already there, might as well make use of them for now.

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

Thanks for all of the replies everyone.

Knight383, Right now the A/C compressor is missing, so I dont know what else of the A/C is needing replacing but I am planning on getting it working before next summer if all goes well.

Jtrux I dont know what SPID pics means could you elaborate. Sorry for my lack of internet lingo.

jorgensensc, I will be keeping the luggage rack on this one, but if I do come accross another one or find one for sale here in Houston I will let you know about it.

Hey Critter, thanks again. From what I can tell it needs a new gas tank, sender unit, and maybe some rubber lines. Unortunately havent had alot of time to tinker with it, but next week I will hopefully get a new tank and sender unit in it.

Longhorn Man and Critter, Hopefully I will find another A/C box but until then I will either try and patch the old one or I will put speakers in the already cut holes, not sure which route to go yet.

Well I was going to try and post more pics to show everyone but dont have time to download and re-size them. Since we are all burb fans, here is a pic of my 1954 suburban to tide everyone over.

What Jtrux means by SPID is the "Special Production ID" (I think those are the right words). It is the sticker on the inner glove box door that lists the VIN# and all the option codes that the truck came with. It is the most accurate way to tell how the vehicle left the factory. Just a tip, if you post a pic of the vin# it is a good idea to either use a computer program to black out the last few digits or simply lay a little piece of paper over it when you take the actual picture so that internet scammers don’t know you VIN. Not the end of the world if you don’t just a suggestion.

I like your style...If you can't give the internet heathens what they want, give them something equally as cool as a disctaction!

Nice "old burb" by the way.

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

Here are some more pics for everyone. The guy I bought the burb from swore that this was the original gas tank. Looks home made to me. Any opinions out ther as to wheter it is an original unit or not. I am planning on putting the gas tank from my 72 blazer on the suburban until I can get a new one.

Here is a picture of the 72 original big block parts burb that I got from shaneschevys in Ft. Worth last weekend.

Another pic of the parts suburban. Not much left, but still has a few usefull items.

I will get a spid pic of both my 72 suburban and the 72 parts suburban posted. Both were heavily optioned when new. Just a question but is anyone doing a registry on 67-72 suburbans. It would be interesting if they were. If no one is doing it I would be interested in starting one for factory big block 67-72 suburbans.

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

that parts truck doesn't look like a parts truck from this angle. It looks cleaner than the one i call clean.
SPID is service parts ID (says it right on there)
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/data/500/x.jpg
that's my big block burb's spid BTW... and in reality, i don't see the fear in the "someone knows my VIN" thing. Your personal info isn't attached to it, and almost all (if not every single) state won't give this info out just if some joe says I wanna find this vehicle.

I think that tank was a dealer installed option. My son has the exact same tank on his, and Ive seen it on others.

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

Longhorn Man, thanks for posting your SPID. Unfortunately Photobucket is blocked here at work and I dont have internet at home. This means I will have to wait and post the SPID pics later when I can get to my wifes office.

Also, the body on the parts burb is indeed in very nice shape. I feel really bad about what fate has lined up for it. The only rust it has is a small amount right under where the chrome door plates went, and three small spots in the drivers side quarter panel. This and the fact that it is a factory 402 burb with 400 auto, posi rear, A/C, etc.. makes me wish I could find a way to get it back together instead of finish it off. Unfortunately I had to go in halves on it with my father in law (if I hadnt I would be leaving it alone and find someone that will restore it). I am trying to convince him to convert his parts from his 72 6 cylinder burb to this tub, but he doesnt want to go thru the hassle. So alas the quarters will be coming off and going onto his rusty 6 cylinder burb. He also wants to take the A/C dash and firewall and put it onto his 6 cylinder burb. I needed the upper hatch and any other useful parts will be swap meet fodder. I am going to try and dissect (instead of hack it apart) the body so as to keep as many panels as I can for future projects. My goal is to send nothing to the scap yard.

CG, I hope you are right. If it is a dealer installed otion I will keep it, but if it is not it is gone. Anyone else out there think that this gas tank looks familiar. Also CG do you know how many gallons it holds if it is one like your sons?

you don't need an outside host to post photos.. you can attach them directly to your post.

"Service parts ID" after I made my post I knew something didn't sound right. Thanks for the correction.

As far as the VIN info, I was just trying to be helpful. I have heard some horror stories but I guess they are just that, "stories".
