ok, got my truck home...now what? lol
got the 68 home yesterday, it's rusty, has some bondo in it, but it's not horrible I dont think. Ran the vin, found out it USED to be a V8 truck:rolleyes: but I'm ok with the six (250) here's the thing: I put another radiator in it and put in a new battery- it will start with lots of cranking and giving it gas, doesnt want to stay running on its own but if you keep your foot on the gas for a few minutes it will idle on its own- doesnt want to rev up easily...there are no wires going to the carb (1 bbl. Rod.) and no vacuum lines (they are all capped off) - do I need to run some vac. lines to it, and where do I adjust the idle speed and mixture? - thanks guys...

before jumping into the carb i'd be checking points and timing changing gas and air filters cleaning gapping plugs//yes there shold be a vaccume line to at least the dizzy for the advance

There is no air filter on it (so far), and it has an HEI distributor on it, also had no gas in it whatsoever, so I put 5 gal. in it, but hopefully it didnt pull a bunch of junk out of the tank- but the tank actually looks fairly new...

Whether it has a new tank or not until you can determine if the tank is clean buy a cheap inline filter and that will kep any of the garbage that might be in the tank out of the carb. If it's a 250 like you said, with a single rochester on it. It's probally so darn cold blooded, once you get it running and get it warm you said that it idles some? Yes you should have a vacuum advance on that distributor. Really shouldn't affect your idle performance though. When you give it gas is it bogging out or starving? I found that on my 61 Burb that has dual Rochester singles on it that air cleaner actually makes a difference. It restricts the air flow some and will help it idle. Is there an exhaust on the truck? A little back pressure will help it too. How long has it sat? I'd say start with plugs and wires... there are several manifold adapters that you can buy that will allow you to put 4 barrels and 2 barrels in place of your single barrel. This is for future reference. I would imagine that the single on your truck is vintage and could stand a rebuild. Probally leaking air and everything else. Timming is also a good place to check. But first find where your vacuum advance should plug and go from there.. Good luck...

...and no there's really no exhaust on it- there's what looks to be a rusty cherry bomb and about 6" of rusty pipe lol - it does shoot some cool flames though... probably gonna get some plugs and wires for it- and rebuild the carb- and replace the v/c gasket and get a breather for that (there's just a hose running from the v/c to the ground right now) - but shouldn't it have wires going to what looks like an electric choke and a fuel cut-off on the carb? -there are connectors there that look like they should be plugged up somewhere lol

The engine and carb are probably a late model transplant. The electric choke just needs a 12v wire going to it. As for the other plug I dought it's a cutoff, never heard of one anyway. It might just be a purge vent for the gas tank or something from a computer. I wouldn't think it would run very good if it's waiting for a non-existent signal from a computer.

yeah, I read the choke should have key-on power going to it, which makes sense, and the other thing is like a anti-dieseling valve/ idle-cutoff valve - I ordered a rebuild kit for the carb, got some plugs and wires, and a fuel filter for the carb (internal) and an in-line fuel filter, so I'll probably get that stuff on this weekend...

Got any pictures? I would like to see the carb choke set up. You said in your first post the it was a Single rodchester with electronic choke. I don't think I've ever seen on.... It will soon be purring like a kitten.... |

sweet score on that truck, my first 68 had the same swap done before i got it, it was less the v8 and full of a mighty 250!
im sry i cant help you with your carb issues the remington wide brutes are great tires i am running them on my 68k10 |

I think the hose that goes to the ground from the valve cover should be hooked up to the air cleaner.
It also looks like you have an EGR valve on the exhaust manifold. Check the number just behind the distributor on the flat area and some one should be able to decode it and tell you what engine you have. The engine in my '67 short bed stepper turned out to be a l6 250 out of a '70 Chevelle. Here is a picture of it. The choke is operated off the exhaust manifold. It is cold natured when it is first started until it warms up some. Danny |

another thing to look at is if the dist. has a full 12V or is it running through the resistor wire.

Now a year later it ...well...looks the same..but it's all the little things that you don't see...lol Did you get a stash of parts with it? Do you need all the lens that are missing? bought tailight assemblies and backup light assemblies yesterday- figured I'd just replace the whole thing Also bought the headlight buckets, all adjuster hardware, the retainer rings and new bezels. Also bought new upper and lower radiator retainers and pads. Need to buy front turn signal lens or assemblies- I forgot about them when I placed the order :(
Should know if any of the lights work in a couple days when the parts get here, or if I am gonna have to dig into the wiring... |

Don't buy the front turn signals lens. I have a set. It'll be the w/e before I get back to the garage but I do have a set if you want them.

Well it doesn't look like a comp. carb. I would just make sure you have a ported vac. to your dist. The other ones you could just plug if don't have anything that needs vac. It looks like you have your PCV covered. It might have had A.I.R. on it at one time. That could be what the big vac. ports are.

well, went to put in my rebuild kit, and it's wrong... from looking around the internet, it looks like this carb is a rochester monojet 1ME, and I think what I need on the truck is a Rochester Monojet MV, does this sound right? guess I'm gonna be looking for another carb...
