What are you using to heat your garage?
My garage is attached to my house. 2 car garage, barely. Its kinda cold in there. What are you guys using to warm the garage up? I dont need it to be heated at all times. I just need to be able to have it warm for say an hour at a time. I bought an electric heater and it has 5000 btu, but it doesnt seem to do anything.. I mean, it would keep me warm, but it wont warm the garage.
The garage is pretty air tight. Some very minor gaps in the garage door seams. I was going to buy a propane heater, but they all say not to use indoors. I know why you cant, but dont know if it would work for a garage.. SOme of those put out 50000 btus. ahah Thats some warmth... Anyways... Any good suggestions would help. Thanks. |

I've got a regular house down-draft furnance in my garage...

Re: What are you using to heat your garage?
The propane heater in the garage es no bueno!
See about getting a duct routed off your house furnace to the garage, and install a good damper so you can close it tight when not using? |
Re: What are you using to heat your garage?
I use an old Military wood stove......Start a fire about an hour before work time, and its nice and toasty.

Re: What are you using to heat your garage?
I have a big old wood burning stove made from a couple of 55 gal. drums. I burn waste oil, and any type of wood (pine, hardwood, whatever) It'll knock the chill off. I have to replace the barrels every few years, but the harware is re-useable.
I have a steel building though, and it is no where near my house. I doubt I would use the same set up in a garage attached to my house! |
Re: What are you using to heat your garage?
How do you burn the waste oil? Do you just let it drip on the wood, or do you burn it alone by injecting it under a bit of pressure, or ???
Thanks for any info. CCCC |
Re: What are you using to heat your garage?
I am using a Mr. Heater 45,000 BTU Garage Heater from Northern Tool and Equipment to heat my 1,000 ft detached garage. This will be the 3rd winter with it. I haven’t had to fire it up yet this year as it is still getting in the 80’s in November! The very first winter the igniter circuit board went out right away and the Mr. Heater folks were very helpful in expediting the parts to me right away. Other than that it works great and haven’t had any other problems since the first year…..knock on wood.

Re: What are you using to heat your garage?
I have 3 bullet style kerosene heaters and a wood stove. The kerosene heaters I might start burning mineral spirits in so they burn cleaner. Eventually I will switch to a couple of the ones like pictured above (although much bigger)and run them on propane.

Re: What are you using to heat your garage?
I have 2100 sq ft in my basement and a little over half of that is where I have my shop. It never gets really cold in there. I got tired of buying kerosene so I got a natural gas heater and tapped it off of the line to the hot water heater in the basement. It puts out 30,000 btu's and will knock the chill off pretty quickly. Mine looks like an old cast iron wood burning stove, but that's just what I found on sale at the end of a season.

Re: What are you using to heat your garage?
Dont have to use a heater very often but when we do; my dad has a large kerosene heater for his 40x60 metal shop. I use a small electric heater for my 20x24 attatched two car garage.
I dont know why everyone else in Texas always makes it out like we have hot weather in winter. Most of the time it is nice but it still gets cold from time to time. Hell last week the lows in Houston were 38 degrees, San Antoni/Austin 32-35 degrees, and Dallas/Ft Worth 30 degrees. And it was still October! Also, dont even get started on how cold Lubbock and Amarillo get, yikes!! This week its warm again with lows in Houston 58 degrees and highs 84 degrees. Not pointing my finger at you chrislehr, I am more or less reffering to another thread where most of the people replying were from Texas and acting like it never gets cold here. |

Re: What are you using to heat your garage?
My shop is 40x60 and I use John Deere torpedo type. They are 225000 BTU's. I burn jet fuel[ jet A ]. I also have a 7 bulb heat lamp to heat up panels before applying fillers or primers. Since I am better insulated than most people[FAT] I don't have to be to warm to work comfortably. I also take a lot of pain meds that make me sweat. When I put somthing into the paint booth I can point one of those heaters at the booth and it will get hot. I have opened the front door with the heater running into the booth and can get the temp in there over a 100 pretty easy. That sure makes the paint flow! Jim

Re: What are you using to heat your garage?
I don't have any heat in my 900sq ft attached garage :( So I just wear a sweatshirt and gloves and make do. I might have to figure something out if I want the truck finished by march though. I guess I have one of those 1000 W Halogen lamps that puts out some heat, but that's not it's sole purpose obviously.

I just finished putting a metal ceiling in the shop (30x40) and purchased a Lenox 155k, 80% efficient hanging heater. I got a pretty good deal on it as it was ordered for a friend of the bosses son and he ended up getting a divorce and never took delivery of the heater... LockDoc |
