Glass install how to?
 

It seems that this is a straight forward operation, but wanted to check before getting off on the wrong foot.

I believe that the rubber gasket is installed onto the glass, a rope is installed into the channel in the rubber, then the seal is worked into the opening in the cab.

First question, does it make a difference whether the glass is installed from inside or outside the cab?

Is the rubber gasket installed dry, or should I use some silicone, weatherstrip adhesive etc. to first glue the gasket to the glass? (I am having trouble getting the rear glass gasket to stay in place)

What is the best to use to glue together the ends of the gasket on the rear window? The gasket I received is a few inches too long, and open ended.

Any other tips or tricks?

All the "old" glass guys I know prefer to install the glass dry... This is the way, I believe, they were originally done. The trick I was told is to pull the rope out with a small circular motion... not straight out. Apparently, it helps work the rope out and prevents it from grabbing the gasket. Also, as the glass is going in, you want to "slap" it in using a cupped hand. This helps seat the glass in place.

I don't know if it's the right way but it worked for us. We installed the rubber first (no silicone) I held it to the truck with blue painters tape. My wife stayed inside the truck holding the glass while I installed the glass from the outside. She made sure the glass didn't fall in. Once we got the bottom and sides in, we used some string and worked in the top. After both sides of the front windshield were in, we used black silicone/glue to the rubber (rubber to truck and rubber to glass.) It worked great for us. I don't think I'd try it without help. There were a few times my wife saved the glass from falling in to the truck.

I'm no expert but i've seen guys put the rubber in the truck first then put in the glass then the rubber spreader strip. this may only work on the back glass, not the front. i personally have tried the rope trick but after 2 attempts at the rear window using the rope i've decided to try something different. i can't wait for the front glass i've been thinking i should have a pro do it for me....

When the glass was installed in my 54 they did the rope from the inside and used a soap/water mix to lubricate things. The rubber was placed on the glass then fit to the opening. The corner glass was a bit different as the rubber was cut so an extra length was there. Once the majority of the glass was in place the seam location was set and the extra trimmed to fit.

They used the plastic glass sticks to help coax the rubber into place. It was money well spent in my opinion.

It sounds like dry installation is the route to follow. But what about the issue of the ends of the gasket? The one I got is a cut to fit type that cam a few inches too long. Do I need to somehow glue the ends together to make a continuous seal?
