1968 C30 DumpTruck Engine Probs! Help!
Hi, its Chevytruckjerry again, after a little hiatus. I had to sell my project '68 C10 earlier this year, so I hadnt been on in a while. Now, I have a new project, a 1968 C30 DumpTruck.
Call me certified crazy, but I'm going to make this my daily driver for a while. I do 18 miles a day total to work and back. Its just one of those things where I havent finished a project or anything cool in a long time and I want something "different" to drive to work everyday. lol Anyway, it belongs to the boss of a friend of mine, they used it for hauling garbage (works at a cemetary). They told me it ran great, then all of a sudden one day started running like crap and backfiring, pretty soon it wouldnt' run long enough to move it. So the boss is getting rid of it. I just need to get it running and get it the hell out of there! It has the 250 inline 6, coupled to a 4 speed (not sure which one, im hopin a muncie 465). It has a Rochester MonoJet, looks like the same carb that should have been offered on that year truck and engine, but has a remanufactured tag on it dated sometime in 2001 so its probably not THE original. So far when I tried it, it would only run with the choke all the way out, even when it had been idling for a while. Needed to give it touches of the throttle to keep it running, too, and it ran like crap. They said it backfired, so I would have thought they meant out the carb, but every now and then it exploded out the tailpipe, so I was figuring not all the fuel was getting burned. That day I tried it, it just seemed to get worse and worse. Pretty soon it was all I could do to get it started to run for just a few seconds. The points were pretty worn, so I changed the points, condenser and coil. I also loosened the distrubutor and moved it arounnd while cranking. Tried it, and it was worse. This time it would crank and crank with only a Huff every now and then. I checked for spark, im getting spark. Checked for fuel supply, fuel pump supplies plenty of fuel. Moved the throttle lever and you can see fuel squirts in there. So i pulled the carb thinking i need to rebuild it, when I did that i noticed the bottom of the intake passage right under the carb has a puddle of gas in it. Can the carb be so gunked up its not atomizing the fuel correctly. I ordered a carb kit already. What do you guys think? I appreciate any input, and cant wait to get pictures of my baby on here soon. Thanks, Jerry. |

I think I would start with draining the fuel and checking it for garbage/rust/water. Swap out the plugs and wires unless they look brand new.
Welcome (back?) to the board! |

I agree with LHM.If they used it for hauling garbage, then they probably didn't use it much. The fuel is probably bad and the tank is probably full of condensation and rusty crap. The unatomized fuel may be water.
