Original Front Bumper License Plate

I have the original bumper for my truck and have found a 66 truck plate i would like to attach. The holes line up side to side , but the plate would either stick well above or below the bumper. Is there a bracket I should be using?
Hate to sound stupid, but on this one I just am!

As usual, after asking a stupid question I thought it merited some better research. I found several pics of plates mounted thru the bottom holes and stick up slightly above the top.:dohh:

When i had my tag on the front i believe they were bolted in the top holes and was about in middle of the bumper, but id have to look at an old pic to be sure. I never had a bracket.. if they have a bracket, heck you got me..

"Rome wasn't built overnight" and "you can get anywhere one inch at a time"...a few quotes I like to live by when dealing with my truck project.

ol Curt, "inch by inch, life is a cinch...yard by yard, life is hard"!

Very nice...that is the way all of the front license plates look on my 4-5-6 Chevy trucks.

I’ve got one old-school CA plate left (the other - the rear - was lost during the theft of my truck back in February) from the front bumper and I’ve got both new tags to put it on the rear bumper when the truck’s up and running soon, and I was wondering if it’s realistic to repaint the original flat black with the orange numbers and letters - or best to leave it all scratched up and original?

Speaking of original...I took the GM HEI distributor off that is depicted in my icon. I wanted the original look, so I went back to a stock looking distributor with a Petronix unit in it. I hope it is ok to offer something like that for free on here. If any of you have a six and are in need, just PM me and I'll send it to you for the freight.

Thanks,

I too have the stock bumper on my truck. However, those bolt holes appear to be for a metal plate, which centers the license plate itself. At least that's the story on my truck. Judging by the, ahem, patina, it's as old as the rest of the truck. I'm assuming it was specific to markets which required two plates. And yes, I need some better mounting hardware.

Check it out:

Oregoon, You might well be right. It does look better centered. If you ever have that plate off, how about snapping a shot of the plate so we all could see it.

Thanks!

My 63 also has a factory bracket that attaches to the bumper. Here's a lousy photo of it.

Will do! I'll be pulling that part off in a few days and sticking it in the electro-tank for a little rust converting. Scored some plastic 55 gallon drums, so I'll be able to de-rust significantly larger parts than those that fit in my old five-gallon tank!

ol Curt 11-26-2008 11:15 PM

Re: Original Front Bumper License Plate

That would be cool. Be sure to show a before and after so we can check out how well your tank works.
