Problems w/Grant Steering Wheel
 

Okay, how many of you guys have one of the Grant steering wheels in place of the original steering wheel? Have any of you experienced the lower housing of the kit grinding against the upper housing of the column?

I was very careful to follow all of the instructions (probably where I made my mistake), but it's tuff to turn the wheel now. I can pull out on the wheel and it turns just fine, but there's no way I can do that the whole time I'm driving.

The kit did not come with any spacers or anything like that to put in place, but I'm beginning to think that there should have been one in the kit or something like it to keep this from being a problem.

If someone can shed some light on this issue, it'd sure be appreciated.

I have a Grant wheel in my truck and it rubbed like you describe. Mine was just an annoyance that didn't hinder turning the wheel so I just ignored it and after a few thousand miles the interference is magically gone! I figured mine rubbed because I had the column completely apart and when I put it back together I tightened the bearings down just a little too far..

had the same problem in our '66, believe it is from worn out bearings in the column allowing the shaft to sit lower in the housing and not parallel. I just happened to have a larger trim cup laying around that i used. you could always rebuild your column or "relieve" the trim cup so it won't rub

Had the same problem with mine.
Sanded the botem edge down till I got the clearance I wanted then painted satin black.

theres a plastic spacer from the old steering wheel you have to keep in there from it rubbing

The only plastic piece that was there was the one that the wire for the horn fits into. There was mention of a plastic spacer in the instructions, but that was with a different wheel.

I may have to take it back off and do a little sanding/painting like was mentioned above.

had the same issue here too. I keep sayng that "one of these days" I'll sand it down a bit......

My concern w/it the way it is, is that it's really not safe to drive. I can drive it the way it is, but if it were to catch really hard then I might find myself in a bind.

And I don't want to damage anybody's vehicle (or them for that matter).....much less my classic.

I guess I need to quit whinning and go pull that sucker and get it over with!
