3/4 ton Dana 44 strength
How would you rate the 3/4 ton dana 44. I was thinking of mounting a meyers 7.5 plow on a 71 with a 44. It is stamped 44-5F. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance. |
Re: 3/4 ton Dana 44 strength
I have seen lots of trucks with plows that have 44's under the front.

There is no difference I have found in the open knuckle 71 and later D44 between 1/2 and 3/4 housings. All the difference is in the knuckle out for the most part.

Thanks guys. I was mostly concerned with them holding up to the weight of the plow. I guess if something breaks I could always upgrade it.

I plowed very rocky unpaved forest service roads in the Colorado mountains since 1980. I've broken a lot of things but never my 44.

Re: 3/4 ton Dana 44 strength
They will take more abuse than most think. my friend had a mud rail that weighed around 8000lbs and had 38" tractor tires with a D44 standard front. He had a nitrous 355 that dyno'd over 750hp. He left the line at 5k everytime and the most he broke on the 44's were axles. An occasional ring and pinion, but that is crazy for a little 44 with big power and big tires. That really opened my eyes a little about the strength of a D44.
