This past summer I treated the '68 to new sneakers. The original tire size was 17.5's so that is what I bought, and they were a bear to find!

They are not hard to find, but are a little pricier than similiar 16" tires. There are still a lot of commercial cabover trucks that use 17.5's (UD, Hino, Nissan). I am thinking of going with on my '67 V-30 because it came with 17.5's also. They look tough and lot bigger than regular 16's.

Mods edited my post. I guess it appeared that I was trying to sell them. Bear in mind I am not looking to sell them. My original post stated that I have the old casings, that I took off bias ply LT 17.5x8. My point and question was should I throw them away and give the town 10 each for the privelage or hang onto them because at 17.5 they could be hot capped. I had a bear of a time finding the 17.5 that I got, I wound up buying Yokahama's from GoodYear.

cool but whats better guys 16inch or 17inch tires

They`re not a real common size that most tire shops have laying around in stock.But,I think any later truck that runs them will want radials.The only value I`d see for the recaps would be a restoration.I think you`ll find a very narrow market.And,there are reproduction bisa ply offered through vintage tire companies,I think.

Im not sure but i think the new f450s are running a 17.5" rim, but it could be a 19.5.

if you have to pay $10 to get rid of them i'd b leaving them in a walmart or sears parking lot:uhmk:

well my rims are 17 somthing but the tires on the rims are 16 inchs

68C-20, be glad for your accomplishment, not many pre '73 3/4 ton pickup owners can say they have period correct rims on their truck.

There's a thought! Maybe I could buy 4 15's for the Wife's Z-24 at Wal-mart, then "return" these and get my money back! :-)

factorystock, thanks, everything on my truck is period correct, and it's a gonna' stay that way. If'n it wern't OEM or an Option in '68 it aint a gonna be on it.

When I was a kid we owned the local Mobil Service Station in town. My intent is to turn the '68 into the period correct Road Service Truck like the one my Grandfather "Pappy" owned. Just need to find a couple more parts. I have the correct tow bar, his tool box, tow chains, jumper cables, built the cab protector with double sided yellow Dietz Round flashing yellow lights, I have the have red rear facing Dietz lights for Brake/Turn while towing. Have the spotlight for the A-Piller to install.

Need to find two chrome movable spot lights to mount on the cab protector that could be turned to shine on the car you were working on. Have a friend with a FireTruck with two on the rear I hope to liberate and have re-chromed. I Need a period fuel can with the MobilOil or MobilGas logo, and need to have some Magnetic Door signs with the business name and Mobil Flying Horse made. Oh and I am searching for a particular bumper style, but I am going to post that to another thread.

Do you have a SawZall? If so, you can cut out the side walls, cut the casing in about 5 or 6 pieces. Take all this and LEGALLY put it into the regular trash. My tire dealer does this to all his old tires.

That is a great idea, I do own a sawzall and a chopsaw, I could cut those suckers up and dumpsterize them! I guess there is no point in saving them. You don't run into a lot of 17.5's anymore I am too much of a pack rat anyway. Thanks

Yes. Once cut up, the tires no longer collect water and bugs, which is the reason for the fee and special handling.
