Changing to Internal Voltage Regulated Altenator

2 Attachment(s)
I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of my external regulator but can't figure out what set up I have now. I have one plug with 2 wires, and one wire that bolts to the back of my alternator currently. This does not seem to be like others have listed when they do their conversion. My truck is a 72. Was anything changed in 72? Also, one write up said you need to connect the idiot light for it to work correctly, but I don’t see where my wire for that is.

What alternator are you installing?

there is a thread on here that explains the whole process really well, with pictures and everything. try searching for it, should be able to find it

This kit plugs in, has rubber ends to protect & lock in better and you can go back, if wanted.
Sells for $22 shipped.

I got an easier fix for you....get an '87 Silverado alternator....90 amps iirc. The you take the outer two wires on the four wire plug that went into the regulator and wire them together. Then you can install the alt with a one wire connection. You jump the hot wire to the second connection on the alternator and your done. I can't get pics right now and I hope I haven't left anything out, but the new alt fits perfectly on the stock arm and lets you run just about anything you want to add without a drain.

My lights used to dim sometimes....not any more!

Re: Changing to Internal Voltage Regulated Altenator

This is a VERY simple switch that is WAY over thought.

1. At the old regulator plug #1 to #3 and #2 to #4. Count in either direction. It is all the same. Make the jumpers from common crimp on spade connectors.

2. Buy a new alt connector for an internal regulator from the "HELP" or the electrical section of you local parts store. The plug will be flat. Take small screw driver and pop the connectors out of the plastic plug. Now pop the old connectors out of the old square type plug, pop the old connectors into the new flat plug.

3. You will have an extra black wire at the alt. This is a ground wire and is not needed. Tape it back out of the way, or cut it off, or you can try to screw it to the new alt body.

4. If the new internal alt does not charge, the wires are reversed in the flat plug.

Cost: about $3. Time: 5 minutes

ERASER5 nailed it. That's how I did mine.

My questions was, I only have 3 wires running to my alternator now. I see most people before the switch have more then that...I'm trying to see if the PO had changed something.

I don't know what others have listed but I have the same external regulated wiring as you do. I'll be converting once I get my truck back together.

The "extra wire" that is sometimes there is the ground wire. It is not needed now or ever. No worries.

I did mine like the link 1970 Chevy Truck posted.

Took maybe 10 minutes, tops.
I bought a flat plug for the alternator @ the local auto supply, cust was under $10.
I works like a charm.

My biggest problem was the external regulator is mounted under the auxiliary battery tray, so access to it was a bit of a mofo.

My fix was free and only took 10 minutes. And I didn't have to leave the house...hard to beat that for simple.

With this conversion, does the stock amp still work?

Thanks!!!

Anything that worked before will still work after, gauge or light.
