Need help building a 72 door panel insert

Has anyone ever built an insert to cover the top section of a stock 72 c10 door panel?? It's the part that has the ugly western looking sqiggles and also the part that the chrome trim outlines. I'm doing the interior in my first 72 and I'm wanting to build an insert to cover that section. I was hoping to get some pictures or tips to help me out. Thanks a ton.

Aaron

Welcome to the board! When I saw your post it first got me for a moment. I was thinking I dont remember posting that question. Then I see we got a new member with a similar name to mine.

As to your question, There was an option of an insert that was smooth with just a woodgrain look that would go there. You might be able to find a used set and repaint them or cover them. Or if you like the wood grain look you could get a reproduced set in the woodgrain. They are somewhat hard to find lately due to part of the tooling was lost. I hope this helps. And once again welcome to the board!:)

Thanks for the input...I never thought of buying those and covering them/painting them. That sounds like a good idea. Nice name and truck by the way.

Ya that looks good. I'm not a big fan of the pattern though...but to two tone an insert is a grand idea. Thanks

I remember a thread on here a while ago about someone dying their door pannels black and then putting a thin layer of foam over the center section and wrapping only the center part in vinal and putting chrome trim around that part. It looked really good but I havn't been able to find the thread I am talking about.

i dont know how much those door panels cost, but my upholstery guy only charges ABOUT $100 per side to make some. He's going to use my old metal ones and make some custom panels with arm rests. He's also going to add the more modern clips instead of the screws to secure them to the doors......

I had him redue my seat to look like the mid 90's check seats...new form and (fake but nice) leather, was only $350 where I think the original foam alone is $250.

Only Cheyenne door panels has the scroll pattern. The entry level "Custom" interior did not have the stainless trim or scroll.

Custom deluxe trucks also had the scroll pattern. I think the Cheyenne supers had woodgrain... Regular Cheyennes...not real sure...I've seen em both ways.

A very inexpensive way to go is to use counter top laminate. I used a stone look.

You could always find some of the used woodgrain panels and sand them down to the aluminum and use as is or have a sign shop that does wraps on vehicles print some custom vinyl to go over top of them to your liking. You would just have to supply the artwork.

Thanks a lot, that is a great idea. I'm gonna start looking for some used wood grain panels. Peace

I think all Cheyennes had woodgrain on the door panels, but only "Supers" had woodgrain on the guage bezel and the glove box door.
