64-67 Chevelle Gas Tank, will it work??
 

I have been reading up on a couple different posts and was wondering if anyone has used a 64-67 Chevelle gas tank, instead of using a blazer tank, for their truck.

I used to have a Chevelle, and the filler tube is on the rear, just like a Camaro. I have seen a couple of posts of guy that used a Camaro tank and it worked out ok. Below is a link to a picture of a chevelle tank.

I still need to check the dimensions to see if it will fit, but I think it might actually work out ok. Has anyone done this before or seen this out there?

64-67 Chevelle Tank 37.25 x 30 x 6.75
69 Camaro Tank 39 x 20 x 7.75
67-72 Blazer Tank 30 x 19 x 13

Looks like it will fit. Make sure you check the dimensions though.

You need to mount it between the rear frame rails, in the place where the spare tire mounts. So, with that measurement in hand, measure the tank. If the basic measurements are compatible, let us know how it turned out when you are through....and don't forget to take pix and post them on the site.

Did anyone find out if this tank would work? I have been looking at this one or a Camaro tank but was curious which one would fit better.

I did a bit more measuring the other day on my frame. The only way to get a camaro or chevelle gas tank to fit, is to have it mounted under the frame. If you look at how the camaro tank is fitted, it is under the frame, positioned where a spare tire would more than likely go.

If you look at a blazer tank mounting, this tank is a great deal stocker build (small size, but chunky), it fits between the frame rails for the added protection.

I also looked are a variety of other GM tank from the 60-70's. I was able to find one tank from a Caprice, that was thinner size for the frame rails. However, it was 10-12inches longer than the Camaro tank and would be difficult to mount and possibly interfer with the axle/pan hard bar.

So, to make a long story short, a Camaro tank will work, but it isn't between your frame rails. IMO, I want the added safety of being mounted between the frame rails.

If you're gonna have to buy a tank, why NOT go with the Blazer tank? They have been installed in many of these trucks, and there are lots of folks who can give you the pointers you need.

I used the poly under bed tank on my 4x4 and am very pleased with it. Purchased from GMC Paul with great service and support. One of the best mods going for these ol' trucks.

Well, I really don't like the look of the Blazer tank hanging down. Since I am doing a 5" drop in the back, I also don't like having a little less clearence. This is one reason I thought the Camaro/Chevelle tank was cool, since it is angled and almost disappears, especially with a bumper and being lowered.

The second and maybe more important thing is not having to figure out where to put the filler. Having it behind the license plate (just like my '69 Camaro I used to own) is a major plus. I have seen all the different ways to mount a filler, to use the Blazer tank and didn't care for most of them.

Honestly I am not too concerned about the "safety" of being between the frame rails. It's about a 1 in a million shot the right conditions would happen to cause it to explode. Heck, my Jeep Cherokee has it at the back so if I was rear ended, it should blow me up. Not. So many of these are out there and you don't hear this happening. It actually takes a lot to cause gas to burn in liquid form. Vapors are the biggest problem.

I really don't see a license plate fill working very well. The bracket is at the same level as the frame. The Camaro, Caprice, Chevelle, etc used license plate fills, or filler doors, that were located up high between the taillights.

The only time I've seen this successful on a truck was on one that had the bed floor raised and the filler was behind the tailgate housed in the raised section of the floor. And it looked like a pain in the ass to fill.

Not true, '69 Camaro's had the filler behind the license plate, NOT up between the taillights. That was '67-'68. I belive Chevelles were behind the license plate between '64-'67.

In the one link above, the one using the Camaro tank spaced it down about 1.5" to get the filler in the right location behind the license plate. Even with it spaced down, you almost can not see it from behind.

70's Jeep CJ tank works good and has a side filler. It dosen't hang down as far as the Blazer. It is only 15 Gallons if you can stand that. You can get one off Ebay withe a sender for about $120.
