HELP! 72 c10 Rear Wheel Cylinder?

I am trying to replace the rear wheel cylinders on my c-10. I purchased a pair at our local auto chain and they barely did not fit. I took them back and accroding to their computers they gave me the correct part numbers. Has anyone done this and had to modify the cylinder casting a little or did I have the wrong wheel cylinders. The numbers on the castings of the wheel cylinders that I took off are 6459 649

what does barely dont fit mean? if its where they go into the backing plate they sometimes require dressing the casting with a file and the backing plate holes sometimes have rust build up from 40years they are upposed to b a tight fit in the hole

Have the pistons extended out of the cylinders some and need squeezing back inside the bore ?

That is exactlly right, But the casting in the new ones are just a little bit larger at about 10 o clock and 2 o clock from the threaded mounting holes. have they changed a little do to after market and time? Just file those or should the new ones look exactlly like what I took off or

If the casting on the wheel cylinder is a little bigger than the backing plate....I would file the backing plate a little at a time until the wheel cylinder fit. Do the mounting bolts line up with the backing plate?

Re: HELP! 72 c10 Rear Wheel Cylinder?

Im not sure. I did not try to install the bolts I tried to install and noticed it was not going to slip into the backing plate so I just compared it to the old one and there was some differences so I box them up and took them back to the O'------. I am going to try to go to a Chevy Dealer ship and take the old one with me to see if they can cross the Casting #'s and see what they offer for a replacment $$.

Just wanted to pick some brains before I did this

IIRC there are regular and heavy duty brakes. It may be possible that there is a difference between the two.I have gotten a wheel cyl that did not have one of the bolt holes tapped.I had a heck of a time with it but learned to always check threaded holes before trying to install a part.

Re: HELP! 72 c10 Rear Wheel Cylinder?

I know the there is some with a 1 1/8" bore and the ones that I have with a
1" bore. It just seems to be the castings that did not want to fit in the backing plate hole do to extra material around the threaded holes, the fluid line hole and the mounting holes looked correct "with my eyes".

file the back of the wheel cylinder until they fit, this is a common problem. It will not take much.

There is a left and a right. They should be stamped and have different part numbers. If you try to install them wrong, you have the problem you described. DENNIS

If this helps...

I just replaced one on my 68 GMC and it was a tight fit. Got them from the local Auto Zone. The pn's they gave me since I bought both left and right rear were Brakeware 33004 and 33005 (Made in China of course).

The last 2 parts I got from the O were a fan clutch (good) and motor mount (metric threads=bad). I used AA for the wheel cylinders for my '71 and they were a little tight. I had to start the bolts and then tighten to seat. Filing would have helped but wasn't necessary.

I went to a local chevy dealer and of course the part #'s rolled 3 to four times. the guy started out looking in a book, looked on his computer, went to another computer, & made a phone call(at least customer service isn't dead) to find out that they are not available and recomended LMC.

I did exactlly what 71TAHOE DID and with my less expensive, identical part #'s as the O' from NAPA and every thing worked out great. It was tight but they fit.

Part # 13387 Driver side
13388 Pass. side

You all "WERE RIGHT" & YOU ALL ROCK!!!!!
