3/4 ton question
I just picked up a really nice loaded 72 C-20 survivor, and was wondering if there are parts made to lower it just like a 1/2 ton truck? It has spindles in the front (8 lug all the way around) and leaf springs out back, and it looks like also it has overload or helper springs. I have seen lowering leafs made and was wondering if they have them for the 3/4 trucks also? Thanks in advance.
Also- Do they make rally wheels in 8-lug? I really dont want to change my axles and rotors if I can help it. |
Re: 3/4 ton question
I've seen drop spindles for C-20's around don't remember who carry's them though, maybe Classic Parts? Don't know about the lowering leafs. How about a flip kit?

Re: 3/4 ton question
no rally wheels, some people like the ugly silver wheels with center caps in the 90's 2500 truck for some reason, others will call them rallys. But they aren't. They are just silver steel wheels.
You can use drop springs up front, have drop spring pocket lower control arms made, or raised ball joint LCA, and I *THINK* there may be a lowered 8 lug spindle made... but I am not sure. out back with the leafs, you can do a flip kit, and then raise it a little, or just leave it and C notch depending on desired drop. |
Re: 3/4 ton question
I will check around to see if there is an 8 lug drop spindle. I have also seen dropped leaf springs, but I am guessing that they are different for 3/4 ton than 1/2 ton. How difficult is it to do a flip kit? Do they make one? Thanks again. This truck rides very smooth and I want to keep it that way as much as possible.

Re: 3/4 ton question
I have leaf springs with a drop on my truck and there are a lot to take into consideration when ordering new leaf springs with a drop ..Believe me I found out the hard way so if you decide to go that route ,,give me a PM and I will fill you in on what all has to be considered for an exact to the inch drop you would want ..

They do sell drop spindles at Performance online. That is going to be my next move. I used 3" drop coils in the front and in the rear I installed some drop shackles, took half the leaf stack out and had the leafs springs re done with an addtional 2" drop. The back I was able to drop by almost 7". I don't plan on hauling with the truck... just ride in comfort.:chevy:

Re: 3/4 ton question
Total Chevy- Thanks for your info, and VERY nice truck! I want to get some pics of the truck I just got and post them this weekend. I see that CPP sells the drop spindles for the C-20...I also see they sell the shackles to lower the rear by 2"...just wondering if they fit both 1/2 and 3/4 ton and if the mono leaf drop leafs will also fit the 3/4 ton trucks

Re: 3/4 ton question
That sounds like a good way to go to save money...so the mono leafs will work for 3/4 ton also??

Re: 3/4 ton question
I bought a set of those drop shackles. They do drop it 1-2", but the top of the shackle hits the bed. When I inquired as to the problem, I was told they wouldn't work on a 3/4 ton. They were made for 1/2 tons only. There was no mention of this fact in the description. They took them back, but were very reluctant to do it. Might save yourself the hassle, and look at other means to lower it. My $.02 .

Re: 3/4 ton question
Thanks for the input Dan. I do want to go more than 2" on the drop and I figured the shackles would hit. I used to lift Jeep CJ's so I am in familiar territory with leaf springs. How are them speakers workin out for ya?

Re: 3/4 ton question
Welcome to the C-20 world of beasts ! :cong:
Its all gravy until the registration comes around yearly.. $229 for my C-20:waah: I remember a thread here where someone lowered a 3/4 ton. It looked nice and may have been in SoCal member If I remember correctly. |
Re: 3/4 ton question
Why is your registration so high?
|
Re: 3/4 ton question
I wish I knew.. the reg fee is $59 or so and they add a "weight fee" of $159 or something like that along with county fees... one fee after another. The DMV wont budge on the fees
Here is the link to the nice lowered c-20 in SoCal. Wow my memory is still working somewhat  http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...t=c-20+lowered |
Re: 3/4 ton question
Cali screws ppl hard when they can. All pick ups are registered as comercial vehicles. About the only way you can *TRY* to get around that is with a campershell on the back.
|
Re: 3/4 ton question
My other 72 is only $40 a yr to register, and it is also considered a commercial vehicle. I had to get it weighed on a grain scale.
No arguement there...Cali does screw people hard when they can. Luckily, any vehicle 1975 and older is emmissions exempt. Go figure...we have the toughest smog laws in the country, and yet the ones that pollute the most are exempt  |
Re: 3/4 ton question
Mine was $149 last time, but it is nice not to worry about smogging it.
I think the tags are going up though because my old 68 VW was $75 last time (last week) and its definitely not a commercial vehicle  |

Re: 3/4 ton question
$138 for Reg in Calif 1970 C-20 empty weight 4200 Lbs. I rarely see any pre 75 vehicles on the road, there contributions to smog are minimal at best.I would look at planes, trains, commerical trucks, even buses( around the clock polluters) as the biggest sources. Most commuters only drive 1/2 hr to 1 hr a day in very clean late model cars.
|
Re: 3/4 ton question
The pollution did not just happen overnight...it has been going on since these cars were built in the 60's and 70's. I am not against owning anything pre-76, as I have owned plenty of older cars. That does not change the fact that they have indeed had a significant contribution to our poor air quality. If you look at the older cars on the road today, they are usually very poorly maintained and you can see the exhaust coming right out the tail pipe.
Enough talk about smog...anyone else have anything to contribute to my questions? |

http://www.classicperform.com/ Spindle Page at CPP: http://www.classicperform.com/6092ch...Coil%20Springs 1971-87, C-20 2-1/2" drop, set Wonder if someone wanted to stay with the 8-Lug rotors? I wonder if the the spindle diameter is for 1/2 ton disc bearing sizes? I did see the same at Early Classic Enterprises Link for ECE: http://www.earlyclassic.com/ Spindle Page Link at ECE: http://www.earlyclassic.com/catalog.aspx "These new Conversion Spindles allow you to upgrade to C-10 front disc brakes on the ’60-’70 model Trucks, and give you the option of 2½" front Drop Spindles for the same price without having to change your tie rods and ball joints." Same question again: Wonder if someone wanted to stay with the 8-Lug rotors? I wonder if the the spindle diameter is for 1/2 ton disc bearing sizes? |
