Going to get it next week!!

Well I found me something to tinker on, my plans are to make a daily driver out of it. Looks like someone decided to put a 1980 or so bed on it, the engine is a 350 or 400, the PO thinks it is a 400 hooked to a 350 trans. The normal on the rust areas. He is taking the carb, intake, and distributor. I want to put a short fleet on it and I will prime until I decide what flavor I want it. So what do ya'll think for $600. I will go get it when I finally get away from work next week.

For $600.00 you did good. For a daily driver that's even better! I have seen worse turn out to be show winner's.

Looks like a good deal. The 400's have either one more or one less freeze plug than the other small blocks on the side of the block I believe. Others on here may know more, but thats one easy way to tell a 400. Enjoy the project!

Nice truck and its got the :gmc2: logo too!
I'm thinking there's issues putting a short fleet on a step side though.

So does this look like a 350 then? I will run the casting numbers when I finally get the truck.

S/T, what issues have you heard with doing this swap? Thanks man!!

Re: Going to get it next week!!

IIRC it's the frame difference between the two. I'm sure someone with more knowledge in this area will say for sure.

I think the bed and sides are the same as earlier, but the fenders (and bolt holes) are different. I think the stepside fenders are getting pricey, but can't be sure.

Looks like the price is right, but beware...

Plan on the motor not being a 400. These are often 305 motors, people lie. A 350 would be good...

Go to mortec.com, print out some numbers and look at the block casting numbers to see what you have there.

Check out the trans. Its probably not too bad an option, but it could be a PG, which you don't want more than likely. I think a PG has a square pan? A sort of square trans pan with a notch is likely a 350. One shaped sort of like Ohio is a 400. A 700 or 400 trans could look like one of the above, but I don't look much these days.

A carb (new), intake and dist will double the price with your labor to install. Used will work if you can find a carb to rebuild or have one.

I don't want to be gloomy, just realistic...

The question is, is it worth it to you to put another motor and/or trans in it as well as what it needs? I have way more in mine, so I'm just jealous I guess ;)

Re: Going to get it next week!!

There are no frame differences on a step side vs fleet side. The factory put the same frames under the 2wd short beds, whether they were step sides or fleets.
It's basically as easy as unbolting and removing the step side bed and then setting the fleetside bed down and bolting it up.

I'd roll in that in a heartbeat.

72lb4x4, I will have my tired 350 and 350 trans out of my 72 when I finally do the engine swap on it. I was thinking that I could salvage the crank (if it is a 400). Can anyone say 383 stroker?

even if it is a 350 or 305 you got a good deal. why not keep it a stepper? buy aftermarket fenders so the wheel arches look right i personally prefer steppers to be a little different. and hugger orange again do be a little dif:cong:

The balancer is different on a 350 than a 400. You cant always tell by the freeze plugs. I have a 400 and a 350 and they have the same # of freeze plugs on each side. Some 400s had a different # but not all of them.

True, the freeze plug bit isn't a sure sign, 400's came with different numbers of freeze plugs. 400's are externally balanced, and I think had the larger balancer (8" maybe?) versus the 6.5" on the rest of the small block family. Either size, the balancer will have a weight on it I'm pretty sure.

I wish I could find that truck for $600...even with the rust and engine/trans stuff, it's a good deal. Absolutely stupendous deal for anyone in the North or East...
