the project started last oct or so and i've been taking thing out and apart... just been too lazy to post pics. now, here's some pics the body work that's been done to date... the driver side is done, put in the a/c deletes and moved the gas fill to the back. starting on the passenger side next week and doing some more work in the engine bay.

in the future, i will be installing a LQ4 mated with a 4L60E and NP241. changing the closed nuckle 8 lug front and rear ends with 6 lug axles w/disk brakes all the way around from a 1972 blazer, 3.73 gears. gas tank from fuelcell guy... more info and pics to come later.

thanks to all the other build threads that i've been getting great ideas from!!

I love seeing these 4x4 build threads, especialy with cool drivetrain upgrades. Are you using a driver's side front axle or switching out the t-case? keep the updates coming!

Re: Project: 1970 4x4 underway...

i'm using a passenger side front axle and a np241... when i bought it, i remember i made sure everything fits... but now that you ask... i'm second guessing myself... my axles are at my buddy's place getting rebuilt... just new bearings and seals.

just wondering why your changing the 8 lug or to 6

Re: Project: 1970 4x4 underway...

i wanted to go with the open knuckles, the closed knuckles had horrible turning radius... i also had a good deal on my 6 lug axles, and the rims that i want were also 6 lug rims. i know it's heavier duty, but i'm not doing anything that'll require the heavy duty needs.

Any updates? I have the same engine/tranny/t-case combo coming this week. How are you planning on running the passenger side front end, when the t-case output is on the driver's side? Keep us posted on the engine swap.

*bump*

I'm working on a 3/4 ton 4x4 similar gameplan (6.0l, 4L80E, NP205)... I went with a JB conversions 3-1 205 case to bolt up to the adapter on the 4l80e to retain the passenger drop and use the stock axles (44 front and eaton rear, disks all around). Curious to see where you are headed.

the transfer case you see in the pic with the motor is a Borg-Warner 4484, i'm not going to be using it. i have a np241 that i'm putting in and it has a passenger side drop.

i'm finishing up on the passenger side body right now. i'll take some new pics soon.

I was actually thinking about using a modern 4x4 engine tranny and transfer case too. However, the transfer case on the newer trucks have drive shafts on the driver side. I was thinking that the front axel would have to be modified to move the pumpkin. What do you plan to do?

drtwhls is going with a np205 and i'm going with a np241... was going to go with the np208, but don't remember why i chose the 241 instead. both of these are passenger side drop t-cases. there are probably others out there with a passenger side drop that you can choose from. on the 205 i think you'll need an adaptor plate to connect it to a 4l60e or 4l80e... but the 241 can bolt right up. you'll need to do some homework if you wanna see how others will bolt on. then you won't have to do anything to the front axle. or i suppose you can find a front axle with a driver side drop instead of a t-case.

When I started I had the same question. I wanted to maintain the 3/4 ton drivetrain which is why I was dead set on the 205. The 205 passenger side drop is extremely rare. I rsearched and purchased a 3-1 conversion kit for my 205 from JP conversions and it let me retain the 205 passenger drop. The JB conversions kit comes with a new case that will bolt up to the stock adapter same as the 241 would bolt to or to the old style figure 8. My front end is open knuckle and didn't want to mess with changing axles. The 4L80E combo is only 2.25" longer than the stock SM465 and NP205. The largest obstacle to getting my LQ4 in was the motor mounting, the 2wd guys can get bolt in mounts, but us 4wd guys don't have the same type of crossmember set up to be able to od the same.

progress has been slow... that's cause fishing is really good right now... but we're working on it every chance we get!! everytime i take something apart, i always end up finding something i really don't want to find... maybe i should stop tearing things apart and just pretend it's o.k. ;)

I've tried that method and there is no quicker way than that to drive you to madness...You always wonder if you should have fixed this or that.

progress has been slowed due to the snow storms up north... i don't know what the snow storms have to do with me down here in florida, but it's a good excuse... last months update, took the bed off to clean up behind the cab, here are some pics; going to paint the cab soon; hope i'll stick to my goals this time.
