friends gotta 1985 chevy rollin frame im wantin the disc brakes offa it? could i use the rear axles or no?

1-use front disc/5 lug, drill rears to 5 lug

2 cant use anythig

3 front end of truck like #1 and rear of truck using the 85 rear axle\

ive known him since i was lil hes a few years older than me, b4 i got into trucks he had a bunch of 67-72 chevys behind his house i just thought it was scrap, until today i was drivin by and thought, i wonder what years those were (didt know) so i called him and asked him, tomorow gonna go over and look at his 72 that hes buildin, i'll try to snap some pics! im excited

The entire front end suspension will swap out to your truck easily. The rear can be used, but it's not a bolt-on deal. You would have to remove the leaf spring perches & then weld new perches on, plus the mount for the panhard bar, assuming you have a coil spring rear. Anyways, I believe ECE & CPP has kits to do this swap.

Its easy if you have a 67 leaf spring truck already! My 67 has/had(being converted to a lq9 engine trans) complete 87 305 w/th350,drive shaft, rear end,front disc brake suspension, power steering, steering colum,seat and everything fit fine.

okay, so its a direct bolt on for the 5 lug disc brakes in the front? i

ts either 85-86-87 cant remember which...

whats it worth, iono if hes willing to sell or not, but ima ask later today, i just woke up lol

i dont think ima buy the rear axle....with it not being a direct bolt in, i'll just have my axles done into 5 lug, how expensive will that be?

how hard is it to put his disc on mine, and do yall recomend driving 5 lug front, and 6 lug rear for a long period of time

Yes. The parts will swap over to your existing front crossmember or you can swap the entire crossmember from the donor frame after re-drilling a couple of holes.

Ask what he'll take for it (maybe he'll give it to you just to have it gone). If he want's compensation, offer $150 & see how it goes.

ECE & CPP offer '5-lug axle swap kits' that have new, stronger axles that fit w/the proper drums. Check their sites for cost.....

Like was mentioned, the disc swap is pretty easy. The 5-lug front & 6-lug rear won't matter except for the different bolt pattern on the wheels. I drove my 68 like that for a while. I used dog-dish hubcaps & you wouldn't even know they were different unless you popped a cap off.

so you've gotta redrill a few holes, other than that the front disc swap is simple and painless?

what exactly do i need to take off the frame that he has laying in his field? i didnt get over there today but should in a few days or so..

When I did mine I pulled the whole front crossmember from the donor vehicle. Mine was in a field too :) I didn't end up swapping the crossmember; just the arms, spindles, etc. It's a really straight forward swap. Just take your time and you'll be fine.

So maybe just find a trailer and borrow the whole fram and do it in the heated shop lol


okay, so the crossmemeber, does anybody got pics im a big noob still...

whywould you have to swap the A Arms...its a direct bolt up with the a arms right?

id rather just have to get the spindles....tell me exactly what to do with picutres would be appreciated lol

The 73-87 a-arms feature full rubber bushings which means more bushing compliance (a softer ride). The original arms will work w/the swap too.

So far I'm about 200-250 into it with everything here except for pads and tierod ends/sleeves

But I went to the junk yard with the rotor and bearings (he wanted to be exactly sure) and picked up the spindles and calipers (and all the hardware) plus my seat belts for 160. Bought 73-87 upper and lower ball joints and have them bolted in my control arms. bought 73-87 brake hoses, their a bit long but fit fine with out rubbing on anything. I'll grab a master cylinder and prop valve new though someplace else. You'll need to swap to 73-87 tierod ends. You could swap the whole tierod assembly, but CPP sells adapter adjustment sleevs to use the 67-72 inner tierod end with the 73-87 tierod end, which for me is cheaper and much easier than swapping the whole tierod setup.

I did this swap from an 81 GMC 2wd. For the rear I took the backing plates off the 81 and bought drums for same year 4wd, the axle brake line didn't line up the way a wanted so I bent new ones. On the front I got 6 lug rotors from GMC Pauls, took the A arms, tie rods, center link and power steering, had to cut a notch on the bumper brace to clear the steering gear but everything else bolted up. The front brake lines are longer and I plan on using the lines from the 81 and run them on the front cross member like the 81. My 69 has holes on the frame in front of the suspension, this way I can mount the brake hoses like the 81 and not worry about binding etc.

Since the suspension was shot I went the pieces parts route instead of taking the crossmember and 73-87 suspension parts are lots cheaper than 67-72.

If you have both trucks side by side it makes it easier to price out.
