86 Shortbed on its way to paint :-)

Well I finally broke down and decided to paint my 86. I've been through the truck mechanically and made the jump to do the body. I bought it 3 years ago from Bigarmz here on the board. Was a stock 305 truck. Drove it home from West Virginia and started playing w/it. It now sports a 260hp 350 w/built 700R4 and 4.10 posi rear. I added a 90 suburban grille and a stepside box. I stripped the truck to save on paint shop costs. I had it hauled to the shop today. Here are some pics.

Looks good John. Is your engine the gm 260hp crate engine or is it one you built?

Its one that I put together. I had built it for an 84 short wide bed that needed more body work than I wanted to mess with. I bought this truck and swapped motors. I then sold the 84 to a board member in Springfield, OH. I had actually sold him 2 trucks.

Its a basic 1986 2 bolt block, w/stock heads that have had the ports cleaned up some, not much. .030 over flat top pistons, a 272H crane cam, double roller chain, edelbrock 7101 intake, and 650 double pumper carb, all exits through headers and flowmaster exhaust. Estimated HP was through a dyno program my brother has.

I have a set of World Products Cast heads w/2.02, 1.60 valves that are angle plugged, and have heart shaped combustion chambers ~ 62cc's I hope. The heads have studs and guides and I'll be using some roller rockers I picked up. Also have an accell 3000+ ignition system. I would keep my carb and cam but upgrade my intake to an edelbrock airgap. I would like to see 325 to 350 HP from that configruation. If the truck body and interior get completed this summer then I'll be working on the engine then.

Nice truck. Can't wait to see it painted! Keep updates on it! It seems to me that you should be getting way more than 260 h.p. with the combination of parts that you are using.

I ran that same Crane Cam in a 350 that I built some 20 years or so back. I really liked the torque that particular grind of cam has. I had camel hump heads, an Edelbrock Performer intake, headers, and a 650 Holley on mine. It was basically identical to an engine that I had seen built in a 4-Wheel And Off Road Magazine article back in late 1986.

They were comparing the Crane cam to the old "151" GM 327/350 h.p. grind. The Crane beat the old "151" big time. I wish I still had that issue. I do remember that theirs put out over 325 H.P. and somewhere around 375 ft. lbs. of torque. Mine was plenty stout until I lost a couple of lobes off of the cam. I replaced the Crane with a Comp Cams 280 Magnum and it ran like a bat outa hell!

You should be getting at least 300+ h.p. out of yours as it sits right now. You have a very good combination of parts in it! ...Joe

Finnally some progress. I told my paint guy that I wasn't in a hurry and if he had insurance work come in by all means take it. Well I dropped the truck off back at the end of January. I just got it back last week. I was only able to pick up the cab and frame. Thats fine by me as I have a rear sway bar to install + I want to paint coat the rear half of the frame. Sure was good to hear it run again. I had my corvette rallys powder coated red as well. Its gonna look sharp. I have to get weatherstrip, carpet and interior stuff for it + install wiring for power windows. I have alot of work ahead of me.

Re: 86 Shortbed on its way to paint :-)

Yeah, I want to get it back together. I'll have all winter though. My paint guy still has the bed. I had replaced the wide bed w/a stepside. The step side needed a little more work than my wide bed but I thought I might as well get what I want. I love the look of the shortsteps. I see Brothers is having an end of summer sale. I plan on getting carpet and some dash stuff from them and LMC for premium bumpers. I would like to buy new grille but don't want to spend the money right now. Thats easy to do later. I gotta go get my rallys from storage and get them balanced. Static balance w/stick on weights. Hopefully in the next month or so I will have it looking like a truck again.

Thanks for the kind words about the truck.

Got my rallys, grille, new bumper/dam and working on the rest. Thought I'd post some pics. Still have to wire up the power doors yet. Getting it slowly together.
