weatherstripping installed, what did i do wrong??
ok, well i aligned my doors with the body lines before putting on the new weatherstripping arond the doors on both sides. after it was dry enough i tried to close the doors and it gets to the first click somewhat easy, but wont shut on its own with minimal force, the only way to get the door completely shut, 2 clicks, is to almost slam it... and it looks like the new gasket is being smushed on the inner part of the door right at about dashboard height... what is up with these gaskets? i got the ones from wes at classic heartbeat and lined them up perfectly when i put them on, they follow the lines exactly, and moving the doors out farther isnt an option because they are already lined up with the body panels... do they just need to wear in more on their own?

did you use the glue-in type, or the press on kind?

They will soften with time. I've always had to give my doors a good shove to close when the windows are up.
They will be stiff for a while. And that area by the dash.... just never seemed to be a good design to me either... Roll down the window and try to close it, it probably closes easier? |

I saw pics on here of a guy taken the strikers off the cab and using a bunge cord to hold the doors shut slightly past closed and that seemed to work rather good after a few days.

thanks guys, good to know that its normal for the gaskets to have to wear in to close properly later, ill probably just leave the doors shut all the way for a while before getting ready to paint the exterior now.

You are just going to have to wait and see if the rubber compresses enough to eventually let the doors close more easily.
Remember, you adjust the doors & seals first, then you align the fenders. Everything lines up with the doors...even the rockers, if you are replacing them. |

Thus is so true to bad the person who put the rockers on my truck didn't quit figure that out till after he welded the new ones in..........:fry: |
Re: weatherstripping installed, what did i do wrong??
They may never close as they did; new w/strips have too much eurathane(?) blended in the rubber to compress enough to close smoothly.

Re: weatherstripping installed, what did i do wrong??
it might be doing this since its cold out and the rubber is really hard or whatever... i put new stripping on last year and it did the same it took a few weeks for them to shut normal

Re: weatherstripping installed, what did i do wrong??
both of my trucks that have new weatherstipping are the exact same way. It makes it a big pain in the butt to align the doors well. I'm trying to find some nos door weatherstrippin for my 72.

Re: weatherstripping installed, what did i do wrong??
I had the opposite problem.
Stock glue-in rubber left a couple air gaps. I bought the press on (actually had to tap on with hammer) and finally can drive 60mph without whistling and feeling a draft.:metal: |
Re: weatherstripping installed, what did i do wrong??
I don't think they will ever soften up. It's a crappy replacement part. Not sure of the manufacturer but you may try metrosoft. In the Camaro world these seem to work the best.
