Short Step Tailgate Supports
 

I need some ideas for tailgate supports to use when I install my hidden latches. I'm thinking low buck/homemade, but clean and functional. I have seen the Mar-k ones and the ones Hokeys sells (very nice), but surely some of you have created your own for less than these cost. Pics would be great. Thanks.

I cut the floor out of a rusted up 72 bed to use in my truck, so I just used the hinges too. I think the easiest thing though would be cables.

Thanks for your replies and pictures guys. Now I just need to decide whether to use cables or straps. Madmatt I just cut the bed floor out of a 97 for mine. I have not done much in the way of figuring out what all I have to modify to make it work though. How did you do yours?

I actually raised my floor 1". I used some 1" tubing to brace underneath the floor. I wouldn't have needed to do that, but the PO cut the bed all to pieces and had welded some things in it, so it was easier to just cover it all up.

I measured it out and cut a section about 1/4" too big, then set it in the truck. I took my plamsa cutter and just whittled away at it until it dropped in, then I welded the seams up. It probably would suffice to just put a few welds around it and use some kind of sealent in between , but I welded the whole thing all the way around, except for a few places in the front to let water drain out.

You answered my biggest question, that was about the bracing. I think I am going to have mine welded to some angle along the sides with the angle pointing down, then bolt it to the bed sides. That way if I change my mind later I can get it back out. Good point about the water drainage. Thanks for the info.
