I need your opinion (Poll)

I am ready to finish my frame on my 68 chevy swb 4x4, granted I cannot afford powder coating, what would you say given: Price, Durability, and ease of use, and maybe some photos would be cool.

I love these trucks!

I would go with por-15. I used paintable under coating on my frame, it looks realy good and it is not soft and tacky like most under coating. Does anyone know why it wont let me vote?

well, you are not from Florida so you should be able to figure it out....hmmm, let me try to vote...

It worked for me, I had to shake out the hanging chad, but it worked....I voted for POR15 eventhough I have never used it....but the word on the board is it is good stuff

I voted for (other) can you say powder coat,thats what I did and It's the only way to go if it's available in your area.

i weighed the cost versus benefit on powdercoat versus por-15 or hammertite, and i'm going the por/hammertite route cuz i don't need the EXTRA corrosion protection that the snow belt guys need, and i don't deal with salt air as south louisiana and florida (to my knowledge) does. powder coat is durable and beautiful, but i opted out cuz i'm not gonna build a show ride and i'm not gonna clean the underside with a baby diaper. on the other hand, i'm not gonna drive it on any dirt roads (or dirt driveways for that matter either). so i guess it'll be a semi-creampuff.

i voted rustoleum..i've done 3 truck frames now and brush painted rustoleum on the frames..looks great..brush marks disappear..and holds up very well..is pretty cheap and easy to touch up..only drove one of them in the winter and it was a pa truck to begin with and all i did was wire brush the rust and paint it..saw it about 3 years after i sold it ..so i looked under at the frame and still no rust just black paint..and i would check the review board before using por- 15

i used tremclad gloss black, bout 6 cans it took, turned out good enough for a daily driver

can someone enlighten me-what is Por-15 and hammerite? I will be at the frame painting stage soon and would like to watch this thread. Which would be look like an original factory finish (differences in texture)?

I voted for powdercoat too, you can't beat it.

I used it on my frame power washed it then sprayed it down with metal prep then power washed again and let it dry.Then primed it let ir dry then painted it a coupla days later.Turned out real good and the $ was under $50.:bowtie:

I would have to vote powder coating. I'm doing my 72 4x4 frame here pritty soon. It is going to cost around $2000.00. But she will be a sunny day pavement pounder. HA HA.

i bought the frame resto kit from eastwood... claims to do the whole frame for 60 bucks...has a rust encapsulator then gloss black paint... I dont know what the results are.... the stuff hasn't made it off my desk yet.

Hey landon4421. Ihad mine powdercoated in hollister for 500. 2000 sounds a bit steep.

turmoline, how many peices other than the frame did you have done? I like the people at Crosslink in Salinas, I am having my axles done, engine parts, and some other misc parts done for that price. may be steep but I shoped around here locally and they were the friendliest people. so they won the bid. thanks for the info.

My truck is going to be used off road, powdercoating would be cool but out of my budget, looks like por-15 in the lead so far.

If your doing off roading I would go with the por 15. Did my frame with that as I live in Iowa (rust). The stuff is hard as nails when dry and hard to chip. The only problem I found with the stuff is it's very UV sensitive. I painted frame and took to long to get box on back and it lost some of the gloss at the rear.Keep in mind to wear gloves ,longsleeve shirt ,hat and plan on throwing it all away as the stuff is not going to wash off

Does anyone have experience with the Eastwood kit for $60??

I was leaning more to Rustoleum until I saw the Poll, looks like POR-15 is taking the lead, but man that stuff is high $$

I'm on a budget, any more advise???

I have tentatively decided on using POR-15 on my frame. It is available through a local paint shop for $31 per pint and the counter guy says one pint will do the entire frame. Does this sound correct? I would think it would take more than a pint.

Also, if you don't use all of a can, how long will it last if you seal it up after using a partial can? I'm planning on brushing it on and will have other parts I want to coat with the same stuff also, probably at a later date.

i went rustoleum. turned out good. i'll have to see how it looks after spending the winter under a tarp. here's how it looked after i finished.

Mstokes, I've used POR-15 and I believe it'll take a little more than a pint to do a frame. ( could be close though).. If you have leftover material to store, at a minimum place several layers of plastic wrap bewteen the lid and the can before you seal it, or the best strategy is to dump the balance of the POR-15 into a smaller jar that has a good sealing lid. This way the least amount of air will be in the container.

I've saved POR-15 after opening the container for over a year, but I had to skim some hardened material off of the ttop after opening the container.
