Re: Anyone got one of these?

I've installed several in various cars/trucks over the years and will continue to do so on any other vehicle that I might acquire that still runs points. Having the vehicle start easier/run smoother and never having to replace/set points again is well worth the $ spent. I would definitely recommend this upgrade for any driver/street performer looking to keep the "stock" look under hood.

The last one I bought set me back about $90.00 IIRC. I bought it through summit, if your runnin' a 6cyl then your options are 1162A or 91162A, if its a V8 then 1181 or 91181. Type in PNX- then the corresponding # on Summit web site to find pricing. If your interested you can look here: http://www.pertronix.com/catalogs/pd...ptx07_auto.pdf for more info on which unit to use for your application.

There's two seperate issues here for you to consider. First, yes, they are great and many many people run them. I have had the Ignitor and the "flame thrower" high output coil on my 68 Camaro 327 for 5 years with no problems ( twenty years ago that would be 10 points/condensor changes to go 5 years!)

Second, the Ignitor is great for keeping the original style distributor and cap..for appearance of pure stock (technically there is one more wire on the Ignitor than a points setup but it is not noticable. Unless you need to have a pure stock appearance (thats what I needed on my Camaro) I think you will be better off with a HEI unit.

my 2 pennys.

I have one in my 250....runs great with it in there. I need to update my avatar as it shows the HEI I had put in prior to that. I wanted it to look original, so I bought the ignitor and a new distributor that was like original. I think I gave the HEI to Tony 'LilRed'. Hopefully he used it in his 292 like he was hoping for.

Here's a pic with mine installed. Some claim you could have trouble with the pertronix on the road and be stuck with no parts. You could keep the points parts and stick them in if you had trouble. I don't drive mine far enough for that to be an issue.
Come to think of it, I havn't driven it anywhere for two years!!

I had one with my 283 engine but when I replaced it with the HEI I could really tell the differnce. The HEI unit was much better. Hard to find them for a 6 CYL though. Evil bay might have them.

I'll have to disagree on the hard to find for a six. They're readily available. Call Summitt, Jegs or contact the manufacturer.

I found no difference in performance in the two (HEI vs Pert) in a six, but did not really hot rod it.

Running one on my 305 and my buddy's 402 right now. Both are the Ignitor 2's with Flamethrower coils.

not the best picture but its the pertronics ignition set up i have on my 292. they are fantastic.

http://img8.uploadhouse.com/fileuplo...2caa5b9df7.jpg

a short story........ I had my timing off at one point on my truck and for some stupid reason, thinking it was the distributor, i ended up swapping between this one, a coil in one HEI, and a stock points distrib. they all backfired out the carb the same way, but the backfire explosion that came from the pertronix ignition was twice as powerful as a normal HEI. KABOOM!!! the result of the stock points dist. isn't even worth mentioning.

Great product, easy to install, ++ on gas milage. made driving that 292/powerglide in the summer justifiable. my .02

Re: Anyone got one of these?

I've installed them before in points vehicles when there was no electronic distributor available and they work great. I usually go ahead and do a full performance tune up with an Ignitor 2 Coil to take advantage of the stronger spark the electronic ignition can offer, a distributor cap with brass terminals, like a Blue Streak cap, 7 or 8mm performance wires, and I generally finish off with a new set of Bosch Platinum Plus spark plugs gapped wider to take full advantage of the extra spark. Basically the Pertronix electronic ignition simply bolts in where the points & condenser used to reside, set the gap and forget about it. You won't regret ditching those old points for a second and if you are a restoration fanatic they look totally stock, with everything hidden under the distributor cap, that alone may be worth the price?

x2 on the coil. Mine is the hotter coil....I just took the sticker off to make it look stock.;)

I guess that depends on location. Almost everytime I go to a u-pull-it type yard locally, I will see at least one, sometimes 3 or 4. I have one in the 250 I pulled out of my '64 and have acquired a couple of extras, just in case.;)
