Windshield gasket?
I got my hands on a perfect '66 windshield today (for $37!) at the wrecking yard.
Anyone have any recommendations on a good gasket? I have no chrome ring on my Burb... Also, any install tips? I've done side windows before, but never messed with Butyl. Thanks! |
Re: Windshield gasket?
What wrecking yard did you find it at.. Damascus U-pull-it? Any more parts.. I could use carpet or who knows what else?? I don't have any window adivse for ya.. But I know the guys at Speedy in Tigard have done right by me.. They are cool and do a lot of old trucks. Took the guy about 5 minutes to put my new rear in and about 10 minutes to put a new windshield in my boys 70 chev truck.

Re: Windshield gasket?
I have had Hampton auto glass in vancouver put mine in. They did a great job. A 64-66 windsheild is a two guy 2 hr. project. The newer gaskets are all made of a harder vinyl than the old stuff. Its a lot harder to put in. The stainless makes it even harder. butyle isn't used in the newer stuff. it is very messy and can run on a hot day and get everywhere. You can clean it with mineral spirts or thinner.

Re: Windshield gasket?
2 guys for 2 hours?
so 4 man hours.....that seems extreme.....what takes so long? |
Re: Windshield gasket?
thats what I was thinking............the guys here that do glass knock em out fast as mentioned above.

Re: Windshield gasket?
Well it might be a little extreme...but not much. it really takes one skilled person with 4 hands and who can be in two places at once.
The last time I had it done the shop had the truck for 24 hours. They did a great job. I'm very picky and I work with glass myself. This is above my skill level. A friend of mine recently had one put in here locally by "an old pro" and he couldn't get the thing in. It was not locked it on the top correctly. My point is that this type of glass installation isn't done much on cars anymore. So please ask the glass shop if they have ever done one before you hand your truck over to them. And true..A drop in,glued down windshield can be done on most cars in just a few minutes by one guy. |
Re: Windshield gasket?
Thats what mine took. 2 guys-2hrs. They said it was because of it being new rubber.

Re: Windshield gasket?
I just had the windshield gasket on my 72 replaced, and I bought the sofseal from board vendor Tim Christian. The glass guy said the gasket was easy to work with and it looks real good (Mine has the chrome). I would suggest trying to find one from softseal or sofseal or however it is spelled. They are about double the price of the no-name brands, but seem to be worth it.

Re: Windshield gasket?
LKQ on Columbia has a nice, clean '66 3/4 ton Longbed, and the Light Truck yard next door has a '65 in reasonable shape.
Happy hunting! |
Re: Windshield gasket?
i understand.....but my question is what did they do for 2 hours.....walk away and let the sun soften the rubber?

Re: Windshield gasket?
Like most everything, I want to do it myself and learn something. So, anyone know where I can get a decent gasket? My best friend's an accomplished bodyman and builder of customs, so I've got experienced help, which is nice...

jason, where did you get your rubber?

Re: Windshield gasket?
Classic chevy on 89th. I think next time I'll just let the glass shop get whatever they want. If you schedule it a day in advance they will have everything ready.

Re: Windshield gasket?
There are several guys at my work (body shop) that have the 67-72 trucks. One needed a windshield replaced and did it his self with 2 other bodymen. It looked like 3 monkeys................... will you know what I mean. The first one cracked. The second went it but it took them a good 45 minutes maybe even an hour. I've roped in 100's of back glass and 2 guys can have a back glass in in about 5 minutes. The windshield gets really tight in the corners. Use some good lube ask the people you get your gasket from what they reccomend.
