Re: Gmc camper 1968
Did a company produce camper trucks like this or did people just install a camper shell themselves? Looks interesting to say the least. I would driver her though!

Re: Gmc camper 1968
Wow, never seen one of these, is it a converted C30? Were there any companies back in the 60's/70's that made "Campers" out of the C/K line for retail sale or is this someone's project? Looks fairly clean, for 2k it might be worth picking up & removing that camper, not sure about those "Vette" seats though...

Re: Gmc camper 1968
These were manufactured by Open Road Camper, Inc. They were built on the C-30 chassis. Lots of them around but not many survived the weather without a little dryrot in the wood. Some board members have owned them...some still do, I'm sure.

Re: Gmc camper 1968
As far as I know, these were made through 1972 - the camper body companies bought the Chev and GM chassis and built their own style camper bodies right down on the chassis. A pop term was "chassis mount". Open Road made some, as did others - many up in the Denver area. I have two - one made by Mitchell - very well done - and not certain about mfr. of the other - but that camper is coming off and it will be a truck hauler if ever I get the time.
Here is a pic of the one by Mitchell, 402 BB, 4 speed, AC and most of the other goodies. In this one we travel all over the U.S. in comfort - and what I consider "style". Attachment 435422 Attachment 435423 |
Re: Gmc camper 1968
The 2nd gen vans took over these models.GM had a factory order deal with Open Road as well as the camper mfgrs building their own or you could order the truck and camper at your GM dealer through the silver book from any number of companies. There were cab & chassis and cowl & chassis models.

Re: Gmc camper 1968
Here's a smoking deal on a big block motorhome where the entire shell has been redone. If you a decent carpenter...just finish the inside. The nice thing about this one is that you know that walls are rock solid. I have looked at several, with the intent to purchase, but they have had leaks that are not good in Seattle!
